WTAMU Lady Buff volleyball team opens Lone Star Conference play with pair of wins

The No. 10-ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs volleyball team got off on the right foot to Lone Star Conference play with a pair of road wins against Western New Mexico on Thursday and a victory at UT Permian Basin on Saturday.

The Lady Buffs (9-3 overall, 2-0 LSC) beat the Mustangs 25-19, 25-20, 25-16, then followed that with another sweep of the Falcons, 25-12, 25-15, 28-26, on Saturday.

During Thursday’s victory, the Lady Buffs played superb on offense finishing the night with 48 kills on 97 swings with 12 errors for an attack percentage of .371 to go along with 41 assists, six aces, 43 digs and five blocks.

Western New Mexico (5-8, 1-1) registered 35 kills on 99 attempts with 14 errors to hit .212 on the night with 27 assists, two aces, 30 digs and four blocks.

Camy Jones was the highlight for WTAMU as the senior registered 12 kills on 19 swings with no attack errors to register an attack percentage of .632 to go along with three digs. Amarillo High graduate and Texas Tech transfer Currie Marusak tallied eight kills as did Emma Becker.

Ainsley Malis paced the offense with 17 assists, while Canyon graduate and senior Bryli Contreras led the way defensively with 12 digs in the back row.

On Saturday, the Lady Buffs closed out a long two-week road trip with a convincing win against UTPB.

WTAMU was strong offensively once again with 47 team kills on 108 swings with just nine attack errors to hit .352 on the afternoon with 46 assists, seven aces, 48 digs and eight blocks.

The Falcons finished the afternoon with 38 kills on 114 attempts with 18 errors for an attack percentage of .175 to go along with 37 assists, one ace, 46 digs and four blocks.

Marusak led the way for the Lady Buffs thanks to 11 kills on 22 swings with just one attack error as she hit .455 on the afternoon to go along with two digs and a block. Becker had nine kills followed by Hereford graduate Taytum Stow with eight.

Malis dished out a match-high 28 assists and Contreras paced the back row with 16 digs.

Next up 

WTAMU continues LSC action back at the friendly confines of the WTAMU Fieldhouse hosting No. 14-ranked Angelo State at 6 p.m. on Friday and will then play Lubbock Christian at 1 p.m. Saturday.
