After winning the season opener against Sul Ross State, the Buffs have now dropped the last four games sitting at 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the Lone Star Conference. The Wolves move to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the LSC.
On top of that four-game skid, the WT offense is facing glaring issues scoring only two touchdowns in the last nine quarters of play.
Both teams got off to a sluggish offensive start before WOU got on the board with just under four minutes to play in the first on a quarterback Jordan McCarty five-yard bruising run putting the Wolves up 7-0.
The Wolves found paydirt again on the next possession thanks to a Dominique Loggins scamper from four yards out as WOU was in complete control up 14-0 early in the second quarter.
The Buffs did have a chance with under just under a minute to play in the third quarter when the offense showed some life.
Trailing 14-3, WTAMU scored its first touchdown in eight quarters on a quarterback Sean Johnson screen pass to Jamal Johnson. Johnson took the screen and sprinted down the sideline diving towards the pylon from 13-yards out. That cut the WOU deficit at 14-9 following a failed two-point conversion.
The Buffs were unable to catch up from that point forward.
WTAMU had 55 total yards at halftime but did play better in the second finishing with 273 yards on 74 plays. The Wolves totaled 344 yards on 44 plays.
The Buffs were 1-of-4 on fourth downs and 6-of-17 on third downs.
Johnson finished the game going 21-of-38 for 159 yards with a touchdown. Johnson also rushed it 23 times for 74 yards. JT Cavender led the Buff defense with 10 tackles, two of those coming for a loss.
The Wolves were led by running back Loggins’ 99 yards on 14 carries and a TD.
WTAMU will have a bye week before returning home to battle LSC foe Western New Mexico at 7 p.m. on Oct. 12.
