District 3-5A

Amarillo High sweeps Palo Duro 

It may only be late August, but thanks to a massive nine-team district 3-5A is underway starting Tuesday night.

With that said, the Amarillo High Lady Sandies picked up where they left off last year by taking down Palo Duro in the league opener sweeping the Lady Dons 25-9, 25-8, 25-16, at the PDHS Activity Center.

Under new head coach Haleigh Burns, the Lady Sandies run their district win streak to an impressive 39 games improving to 17-4 overall and 1-0 in 3-5A to kick off this year.

Palo Duro falls to 8-7 overall and 0-1 in 3-5A.

Senior standout Sienna Cavalier gave the Palo Duro defense trouble knocking down a team-high 16 kills. Bennett Rea and Payton Cash ran the offense combining for 35 assists and Kenzye Stokes provided seven digs.

Tascosa takes down Plainview

Tascosa made the trip down south down I-27 a positive one getting a district opening sweep over Plainview 25-12, 25-9, 25-19, on Tuesday night at the Bulldogs Gym.

The Lady Rebels keep their momentum going from the Granbury Tournament moving to 15-6 overall and 1-0 in 3-5A. Plainview drops to 0-1 in district.

Tascosa was strong on the defensive side led by Bennet Berryman’s 17 digs. Gabby Mason followed with 13 digs and Kassidy Langeland hit the floor for 12.

Offensively, Molly Culp hammered home 10 kills adding three blocks with Saphina Stanley getting eight kills. Libby Miller led the team with 22 assists as Addison Merrell finished with 17.

Caprock edges Lubbock High

In the most competitive matchup of the District 3-5A openers on Tuesday, the Caprock Lady Longhorns defended home court sneaking past Lubbock High in five-sets with a 25-18, 17-25, 17-25, 26-24, 15-11.

The Caprock Lady Longhorns trailed 2-1 before rallying back to win the final two sets for the key victory.

Caprock is now 9-7 overall but more importantly 1-0 in 3-5A. Lubbock High falls to 8-10 overall and 0-1.

Maria Bastardo was stellar in the match hitting the floor for 34 digs. Grace Morales, the daughter of head coach Branda Morales, put together a double-double effort with 17 kills to go with 17 assists.

Teammate Savina Cabello chipped in 24 digs and had a great serving night with five aces and Kendall Wilson went for 11 digs and was excellent at the net with eight blocks.

Non-district 

West Plains nabs road win at Frenship 

West Plains didn’t have any issue jumping up two classes into Class 6A and getting a big non-district win at Frenship by downing the Tigers 25-20, 27-25, 25-19.

West Plains pushes its overall record to 13-7 on the year.

Piper Patterson, who was an All-Tournament selection at the Glen Rose Tournament, led the offense with 14 kills and 13 digs for a double-double. Teammate Aaniyah Kitchen knocked down 11 kills as Bella Wineberg and CeCe Murillo combined for 49 assists.

Bushland bullies Dumas 

The Bushland Lady Falcons moved to 2-0 in the new digs of the Falcons Gym defeating Dumas on Tuesday 25-14, 25-15, 25-19.

Last year’s UIL Class 3A state tournament MVP Mackenzie Sims flirted with a triple-double against the Demonettes dishing out 21 assists adding nine kills with eight digs. Ambree Hatfield had a team-best 12 kills followed by LillyAnn Shannon’s 11 and Avery Ramos had a solid defensive effort with 20 digs.

Bushland is now 19-3 on the year.

Dalhart downs Wildorado 

The Dalhart Lady Wolves kept the momentum rolling from their River Road Tournament championship over the weekend by taking down Wildorado in a non-district match on Tuesday getting a 25-4, 25-8, 25-20 win.

The Lady Wolves push their overall record to 11-2 on the season.

Emily Gaines went for 18 kills and three blocks, Kammi Maddox tallied 13 kills with four blocks and Elli Bezner added 26 assists.

• West Texas High beat Tulia in four sets 25-22, 25-17, 6-25, 27-25. Zoe Smith led the Lady Comanches (8-6) with 25 digs.
• Highland Park picked up a sweep over Shamrock 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 improving to 9-6 on the year. Tessica Deanda highlighted the Lady Hornets thanks to 18 assists and nine kills.
• Vega cruised past Holy Cross Catholic Academy 25-15, 25-13, 25-20 on Tuesday. Standout Jaz Martinez put together a double-double for the Lady Longhorns (12-3) going for 13 digs with 10 kills.
• Sanford-Fritch found the win column edging Perryton in five-sets 23-25, 25-13, 19-25, 25-22, 15-12. The Lady Eagles (9-3) saw Emma Williams come up big with 21 kills.
• San Jacinto Christian Academy defeated Accelerate nabbing a 25-20, 25-22, 25-10 win. Alayna Daniels posted a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. The Lady Patriots move their overall mark to 13-2.
