For Brabham and Robison, the doubles title is their second in a row with a three-peat possible as the duo are both underclassmen and were never really pushed during the two-day meet.
In four matches they only gave up a miniscule six games total with three of those coming in the finals against Julia Pitts and Audrey Pahmiyer of Live Oak Classical as they took them down 6-0, 6-3.
“Harlie and Blayne are so experienced and that helps them understand their placement on the court” said long-time volunteer coach James Wells. “They each know where the other is and they just don’t get upset about missing a shot. They simply move on to the next shot which is so important in tennis”.
It was almost an all-SJCA finals in the girls doubles as freshman Skyla Brabham and her junior partner Alayna Daniel fell in a heartbreaker in the semifinals falling 10-8 in a third set tiebreaker to the Live Oak pair.
Brabham and Daniel cruised in their first two matches before losing to Live Oak in a back-and-forth match.
Senior Katie Cockrell helped the Lady Patriots as well as she made the quarterfinals of girls’ singles before falling to Kinsey Kraner of Northland Christian High School, 6-1, 6-2. San Jacinto easily outdistanced Trinity School of Midland by tallying 20.5 points to 10.5 for Trinity.
The Patriots boys’ team is also home to a state champion as senior Cody Wester and sophomore Zephan Morgan also beat a team from Live Oak Classical (Allan Pahmiyer and Cooper Coburn) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Morgan is a new partner for Wester as Coach Wells decided to team up the experienced Wester with the younger Morgan.
“Cody is such a smart player,” Wells said. “He just knows where to go with the ball and Zephan is so aggressive. Both guys are very even keeled and played well at state”
The pair didn’t drop a set in four matches and weren’t even pushed till the semifinals.
The boys team finished third in the team standings with eleven points, just three and half points behind the state champion, Live Oak Classical.
