Amarillo High rolls over Caprock to stay unbeaten in 2-5A D-I
After some early doubts, the Amarillo High Sandies are starting to look like a contender.
Friday night at Dick Bivins, the Sandies evened their record on the season and completed District 2-5A Division sweep of Amarillo ISD foes, as they routed Caprock 38-7. Amarillo High is now 3-3 and 2-0 atop the district.
The Sandies now have two straight lopsided victories over AISD foes to open district play. They opened 2-5A D-I action last week by routing Tascosa 42-6.
The MO was pretty much the same for Amarillo High against Caprock (1-5, 0-2). Korbin Raef started the scoring with a 45-yard field goal in the first quarter for a 3-0 lead, which began a run of 31 unanswered points by the Sandies to start the game. Caprock finally broke through Lleyton Brown’s 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Pius Vokes led the Amarillo High offense with 143 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Sophomore Jett Lopez also threw two touchdown passes.
Abilene High thumps Tascosa
Tascosa got a quick upper hand over Abilene High at Shotwell Stadium, but it didn’t last long, as Abilene scored 28 unanswered points to cruise to a 42-20 victory in 2-5A D-I play.
It was the second straight loss for Tascosa (1-4, 0-2) to open district.
The Rebels took a 7-0 lead on a 14-yard scoring run by Coltyn Fulton in the first quarter. But that lead lasted all of 15 seconds, as Abilene (4-2, 2-0) responded with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Ryland Bradford. That helped spark the Eagles to a 28-7 halftime lead.
Fulton also threw for a touchdown. The Rebels didn’t help themselves by losing three fumbles.
Abilene’s Dylan Slack threw for a touchdown and ran for another in the second quarter.
Class 4A
Pampa edges Borger in rivalry game
It figured that one of the Panhandle’s most storied rivalries resulted in arguably one of Friday night’s most entertaining games.
In a series that dates back to near a century, these two teams added another historic chapter.
Pampa rallied in a back-and-forth game to have the last say at Borger. Makai Boyce scored his second touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run to give Pampa a 34-33 victory and break a four-game losing streak.
It was a back-and-forth game, as Borger took a 14-0 lead, but Pampa (2-4) rallied to go up 21-14 at the half. Borger (3-3) then came back with 19 unanswered points to take a 33-21 lead with 4:11 left in the game after a fumble return by Tyler Brooks.
Boyce ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Bryce Lynn had seven catches for 105 yards.
Borger quarterback K.J. Jennings ran for 142 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries and also threw for a score. Ryler Moreno ran for 98 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
Canyon rolls over Andrews
Canyon had a solid showing on the road to get ready for the start of district play, defeating Andrews 35-14 with a solid performance on both sides of the ball.
The Eagles (5-1) ran for 262 yards in one of their best rushing performances of the season. Sam Johnson ran for two touchdowns and Christian McGuire ran for 123 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.
McGuire had a big all-around offensive game with 204 total yards, as he also had three catches for 81 yards.
Colt Cruth had a solid game at linebacker for Canyon, making an interception, and scooping up a fumble and returning it 60 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Dumas shuts down El Paso Austin
Dumas gave up a first quarter touchdown but controlled the action the rest of the way to defeat El Paso Austin 27-7 on Thursday night at Odessa’s Ratliff Stadium.
Austin took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 50-yard touchdown run by Ruben Bustillos, but it was all the Demons after that, as they closed the game with 27 unanswered points. They took the lead for good on Luis Escargega’s 49-yard scoring run in the third quarter.
Colton Mills threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns for Dumas. Escargega ran for 131 yards on 15 carries.
