Gruver pulls past River Road
Gruver stepped up in a classification and stepped up on the field to knock off River Road by a 28-22 count on Friday night at Wildcats Stadium.
The first half was back and forth with Wildcats leading 16-14 late in the first half until Greyhound quarterback Briggs Satterfield found Pake Babbs on a 14-yard screen that gave Gruver the lead for good going into halftime 21-16.
The Greyhounds were then able to extend their advantage early in the fourth at 28-16 with another Satterfield to Babbs connection of 12 yards.
Satterfield finished 11-of-15 for 121 yards passing with two touchdowns and ran for 91 yards on 16 carries with another score. Running back Pratt McLain tallied 86 yards on 27 totes for a score. Babbs had both TD catches on 30 yards receiving and Stephen Cowan tallied 11 total tackles with an interception.
In the loss, River Road’s Jaulen Nelson picked up 108 yards on the ground on 15 carries with a pair of TDs.
Gruver moves to 4-2 overall on the year. The Wildcats fall to 1-5.
Bushland rolls over Riverside
A long road trip was well worth through mother nature did call it short during the Bushland Falcons 68-20 rout of El Paso Riverside on Friday night at Wigwam Stadium in Seminole.
The Falcons had the game well in hand before the contest was called after three quarters due to lightning.
Bushland racked up 488 yards of offense in three quarters with 310 of those coming through the air. Behind a great offensive line performance, quarterback Dawson Jaco had time to be very efficient going 19-of-24 for 310 yards with five touchdown tosses. Jaco also has become a runner of late scoring three more times on 46 yards.
Tanner Adams was a mismatch for the Riverside secondary. Adams used his speed to haul in seven catches for 170 yards with four TD receptions, and Easton Fuentes also found paydirt on 46 yards rushing.
Bushland (5-1) will open District 2-3A Division I play at unbeaten Muleshoe (6-0) next week.
Muleshoe stays unbeaten by beating up Brownfield
The Muleshoe Mules continue to impress with another offensive explosion during a 48-21 blowout win at Brownfield on Friday night.
The Mules stay perfect on the year moving to 6-0 for the first time since 2009 and will open District 2-3A Division I play with a home showdown against Bushland (5-1) next week.
The Muleshoe offense went over 40 points for the sixth game in a row led by the arm of Nathan Martens and a dominant ground attack. Martens was superb through the air in the victory against the Cubs (3-3) going 14-of-19 for 200 yards with two touchdown passes. Daniel Sianez led the ground effort knifing through Brownfield for 148 yards on 17 carries with a pair of touchdowns while Josue Sigala punched in two touchdowns on 51 yards rushing.
Ramzee Martinez was Martens go-to receiver catching four passes for 112 yards with a score.
Noah Cantu led the Muleshoe defense that held Brownfield to 207 yards with nine tackles.
Dalhart rallies to take down Levelland
Dalhart erased a nine-point second half deficit to rally past Levelland for a big 41-31 victory at Lobos Stadium on Friday night.
Levelland (2-4) started off strong taking a 23-13 advantage into halftime. The Lobos pushed that lead to 29-20 in the third quarter before the Golden Wolves finally got it going outscoring Levelland 21-2 the remainder of the way.
Quarterback Kyler Read hit Hunter Tresler on a 14-yard pitch and catch that helped cut the deficit 29-27 late in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Dalhart took over the lead on a Read 10-yard scoot to go up 34-31 and picked up some much-needed insurance on a 14-yard connection from Read to Ben Meyer for a 10-point advantage.
Read was magnificent in the comeback charge bullying his way over Levelland for 129 yards on 28 carries with two rushing scores. Read also threw for 203 yards on 15-of-23 passing with three more TDs to total 332 yards of offense with five scores.
Trusler also had a strong performance catching six passes for 107 yards with a pair of TDs and rushed for 68 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown.
Dalhart improves to 5-1 overall and will open District 2-3A Division I play at River Road (1-5) next week.
Friona holds off Slaton
Friona scored the lone touchdown in the second half which was good enough to earn the Chieftains a hard fought 15-8 win on the road against Slaton on Friday night.
After an 0-3 start, the Chieftains have put together back-to-back wins moving to 2-3 overall while the Slaton struggles continue falling to 0-6.
This was a defensive battle with the Tigers leading 8-7 at the break. However, in the third quarter, Friona took the lead and never looked back when Cade Seaman scored on a 3-yard run and after the 2-point conversion went up 15-8.
The Chieftain defense held that lead up, holding the Tigers the rest of the way. Friona limited Slaton to 129 yards of offense with Abraham Rocha making a team-high 11 tackles. Seaman was the spark on offense for the Chieftains rushing for 100 yards on 24 carries with a score. Cade’s twin brother Carson, rushed for 53 yards on 11 carries.
Class 2A
Wheeler finds win column with blanking of Boys Ranch
It’s been a frustrating start to the year for Wheeler, but on Friday night the Mustangs put those dissatisfactions to rest with their first win in 2023 and did it in emphatic fashion by blanking Boys Ranch 34-0 at Nicholson Field in Wheeler.
Wheeler is now 1-4 overall after its first win while Boys Ranch drops to 2-4.
The Mustangs heavy ground game was the difference in this contest. Wheeler ran right over the Roughriders for 359 rushing yards.
Running back Julius Atherton had a huge night piling up 171 yards on only 14 carries with a touchdown. Teammate Jesus Enriquez chipped in 130 yards on nine carries with two scores.
The Wheeler defense held Boys Ranch to 107 total yards.
Stratford burls over Perryton
The Stratford Elks played strong on both sides of the ball to take down Perryton 33-13 at E.L. Sam Bass Stadium in Stratford on Friday night.
The Elks close out the non-district schedule at a perfect 5-0 before opening District 1-2A Division I play at Farwell next week. Perryton drops to 1-5.
Stratford quarterback Bryce Braden and Isreal Licon had quite the connection in the victory. Braden and Licon connected for two touchdown passes of 46 and 21 yards in the first half and Licon added a rushing touchdown. Braden finished the night going 11-of-18 for 129 yards with those two passing TDs and tacked on 63 yards rushing off eight carries. Licon rushed for 41 yards with a score and snagged five catches for 77 yards with a pair of touchdowns.
Defensively, Stratford held the Rangers to 245 yards of offense with Braden racking up 16 tackles with a sack. Teammate Julio Valdez added 13 tackles with two sacks.
Perryton’s
Sunray blasts Guymon, Okla.
As expected, and as they’ve done most of the season, the Sunray Bobcats lit up the scoreboard blowing out Guymon, Okla., with a commanding 68-27 victory at home on Friday night at Bobcats Stadium.
The Bobcats (5-1) have put together four straight wins with the Bobcats explosive offense putting up over 60 points for a fourth straight contest.
Quarterback Armando Lujan continued his torrid pace of passing yards and passing touchdowns while doing his job on the defensive side of the ball against the Tigers.
The junior gunslinger was flat out impressive picking apart the Guymon secondary throwing for 394 yards on 31-of-44 passing with eight touchdowns to five different receivers. Lujan was far from done, using his feet to carry the ball six times for 80 yards with another score and had two interceptions on defense with four pass breakups.
Lujan has even passed a special milestone of late, going over the century mark for career passing touchdowns currently sitting at 111.
Sunray receiver Ty McDowell made the most of his opportunities Friday snagging three catches for three touchdowns totaling 14 yards. Damian Barragan snagged five catches for 109 yards with a TD and Connor Petereit had seven catches for 109 yards with a pair of receiving scores.
Defensively, Sunray held Guymon to 216 total yards and forced five turnovers.
