The Canyon Lady Eagles capped off a strong first week of District 4-4A play by surviving against rival West Plains in five-sets at the Wolves Gym on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles seemed to be in control taking the first two sets 25-17, 25-15, only to see West Plains roar back taking the third set 25-21 then even things up in the fourth set 25-17. Canyon was able to regain the momentum and take over in the fifth set for the victory 15-4.

The Lady Eagles are off to a 2-0 start in District 4-4A while improving to 20-6. The Lady Wolves (16-12) drop to 1-1 in the league.

Senior Laney Jones dominated the net offensively and had a tremendous defensive effort in the match for Canyon. Jones slammed down a team-best 20 kills past the West Plains defenders and followed that with 25 digs for a double-double. Teammate Klair Stone came up clutch with a double-double of her own posting 11 kills with 12 digs, and Brylee McElroy orchestrated the offense thanks to 29 assists.

Teagan Hudson did all she could for West Plains leading the Lady Wolves with 15 digs and 12 kills for a double-double, and Idaly Sotelo had a gutsy showing with 37 digs.

QUICK HITS

Randall kept pace with rival Canyon with a sweep of 25-16, 25-20, 25-21, on Saturday. Sophomore sensation Chloe Brown put together her second straight double-double knocking down 12 kills to go along with 17 digs. Amber Matthews followed on the attack with 11 kills. The Lady Raiders (24-5) are now 2-0 in District 4-4A. Pampa slips to 16-12 overall and 0-2.

Dumas found the win column for the first time in district with a four-set win against Borger, 25-20, 25-12, 22-25, 25-22. The Demonettes (15-9) move to 1- in the league while Borger (11-10) drops to 1-1. Standout Sophie Clements showed her range in the win for Dumas passing out 24 assists with 10 digs for a double-double and added nine kills. Despite the loss, Borger’s Addy Bridges had 16 kills.

It was a solid day for Hereford during a 25-22, 25-17, 25-15, sweep of Perryton on Saturday. The Lady Whitefaces are now 1-1 in District 4-4A and 15-15 overall. Perryton sees its record go to 11-18 on the year and 0-2 in the league. Lilly Madrigal led Hereford thanks to 27 assists and 12 kills for a double-double.

In District 3-5A, Amarillo High has now won 73 straight district matches after getting a blowout sweep of Lubbock High on Saturday, 25-11, 25-9, 25-15. The Lady Sandies (20-8) are in sole possession of first place in district at 6-0. Harper Vaughan and Brenna Seideman each powered down 10 kills and Ansley Davis worked the defense thanks to 13 assists.

Frenship stayed a game back of AHS thanks to a sweep of Caprock, 25-16, 25-8, 25-17. The Lady Tigers saw Reese Roberts register a double-double by owning the net with 15 kills and 12 blocks. The Lady Tigers push their record to 21-10 overall and 5-1 in District 3-5A.

Tascosa is also a game back of the Lady Sandies after taking down Frenship Memorial in three-sets Friday, 25-19, 26-24, 25-22. The Lady Rebels are now at 5-1 in the league and 15-13. Presley Ward put together a great match going for 15 kills and 16 digs to tally a double-double.

In two other league scores, Lubbock-Cooper downed Lubbock Monterey 25-18, 25-22, 25-12, and Lubbock Coronado defeated Palo Duro, 25-10, 25-15, 25-11.

In a non-district match Saturday, the Bushland Lady Falcons handled Lubbock-Cooper Liberty in straight sets 25-23, 27-25, 26-24, on Saturday. The Lady Falcons are now an impressive 25-6 on the season. Laynee Adams powered the offense with 11 kills, Charley Freeman paved the way for the defense thanks to 14 digs and Morgan Eberly dished out 22 assists.
