Randall rolls over West Plains to stay unbeaten in district

In the second year of a fast-growing rivalry that’s become one of the more premiere matchups in the Texas Panhandle, Randall stayed the course by handling its rival West Plains in four sets to maintain an unblemished mark in District 4-4A with a 25-17, 25-12, 23-25, 25-18, victory at a hostile Randall Gym on Tuesday night.

The victory pushes the No. 1-ranked Lady Raiders district win streak to 20 straight dating back to last year as Randall improves to 4-0 in the league and 28-3 overall. West Plains suffers its first loss of district dropping to 3-1 and 27-7 on the year.

“We know this game is always going to be a battle since it has become a built-in rivalry,” Randall head coach Haleigh Burns said. “It’s intense, it’s full of emotions, and I think this team did an incredible job of stepping up and did what was needed.”

Randall was in complete control from the start swinging the momentum in the first set. The Lady Raiders jumped out 13-8, then after the Lady Wolves tied it at 13, Randall rallied right back to climb up 18-14 and never looked back for a 25-17 first set win.

The second set was complete domination. Randall ran out to an 18-8 lead on the way to a 25-12 victory but give West Plains credit. Facing a sweep in the third set, the Lady Wolves went on a 10-1 run to force a fourth set with a 25-23 victory.

That was as close as the match got as put the game way down the stretch of the fourth set scoring the final four points for the victory.

“We love these intense games,” Burns said. “Feeling that pressure and that challenge makes us want to be better. We have great chemistry and we responded when we needed to. I think we felt fatigue a little bit in that third set and give West Plains credit they are a good volleyball team. We gave them some energy and they took it. We made some silly errors in that third set also, but we came back and adjusted in the fourth set. I’m proud of this team for coming together and getting it done.”

The dynamic duo of Sidney Soria and Jordyn Gove as usual were the best two players on the floor and that was a huge difference. Soria, who verbally committed to the University of North Texas on Monday, was a passing machine handing out 41 assists to go with 13 digs for a double-double, adding four kills and two blocks. Gove, the verbal commit to Valparaiso, had another monster outing with 28 digs and powered home 13 kills with that dominant right hand. Brooke Henderson stepped up with a double-double hitting the floor for 18 digs and 10 kills to go with three aces and Kenna Miller chipped in 29 digs. 

Despite the defeat, Jayli Franklin tallied 16 digs with nine kills to lead the Lady Wolves. Teammate Brooklyn Garcia had a team-high 14 kills and McCall Sims put up 22 digs.

Hereford stays unbeaten in district 

Hereford kept pace with Randall by getting a 25-13, 25-23, 25-10, sweep of Dumas at home on Tuesday night.

The Lady Whitefaces stay undefeated in District 4-4A at 4-0 while moving to 13-14 overall. Dumas (15-20) is still seeking its first league win falling to 0-4.

Kyndal Blair continued her great season with 27 kills to lead the Lady Whitefaces while Alee Purcella knocked down 15 kills. London Baker did her job setting Blair and Purcella up finishing with 35 assists and Madi Madrigal added five digs.

Dumas’ Ashley Suggs had 22 digs on the night. Kennedy Clements and Rylee Schacher each had five kills.

Canyon sinks Borger 

The Canyon Lady Eagles were able to bounce back after suffering their first loss of District 4-4A by beating up Borger in four-sets, 23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 27-25, on the road Tuesday night.

Junior Brookly Kinsey was a key cog for Canyon in the win as the junior went for a double-double. Kinsey was great on both ends hitting the floor for 16 digs and knocking down 11 kills. Isabel Hunt added a game-high 18 kills for the Lady Eagles, Alainna Bellino and Laney Jones combined for 40 assists and Sydnee Winfrey along with Maddie Haugen each had six blocks.

Borger’s Isabella Pena tallied a double-double effort with 21 assists and 10 digs. Jordyn Petitt also chipped in with 14 kills, six digs and two blocks.

Canyon improves to 16-15 overall and 3-1 in District 4-4A. Borger is now 1-3 in the league and 15-12 overall.

Pampa gets first district win 

After a rough start to District 4-4A play, the Pampa Lady Harvesters were able to break into the win column by grabbing a sweep of Perryton 25-12, 25-19, 25-18, on Tuesday.

Maecie Hawthorne and Mazi Smith were quite the duo to lead Pampa in the victory. Hawthorne finished with 16 assists with six kills followed by Smith’s 10 kills and six digs. Teammate Carsyn Hunt added eight digs.

Pampa is now 1-3 in district play and 15-13 overall. Perryton struggles continue at 0-4 in district and 2-17-2 overall.

District 1-2A

Sanford-Fritch sweeps Vega, West Texas High downs Memphis 

Sanford-Fritch and West Texas High opened District 1-2A action with wins on Tuesday night.

The Lady Eagles opened their league schedule by getting a four-set win over Vega, 27-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18.

Sanford-Fritch moves to 19-6 overall and 1-0 in District 1-2A. The Lady Longhorns fall to 0-1 in district.

Emma Williams collected a double-double for the Lady Eagles with 12 kills and 11 digs while adding five blocks. Teammate Avery Connor had 10 kills with three blocks and Kinley Roberts put together 21 assists.

West Texas High battled Memphis on Tuesday coming away with a 25-20, 25-8, 25-8, sweep.

The Lady Comanches are now 1-0 in District 1-2A. Memphis falls to 4-8 overall and 0-1 in the league.

London Morrison led WT High with 10 kills. Teammate Jewelya Raiford chipped in with six aces and Addison Lindley added 21 assists. In a hard-fought effort, Memphis’ Macaela Graham tallied seven digs, six aces with four kills. Analise Graham went for three aces and Melanie Espinoza finished with 11 digs.

Non-district 

Bushland survives Tascosa in five sets 

Playing for the second time in five days, Bushland was pushed to the limit, however, was able to hang on to knock off Tascosa in a five-set thriller, 25-17, 17-25, 25-22, 15-11, at the Tascosa Activity Center on Tuesday night.

The win puts Bushland at 28-6 overall and moves Tascosa to 21-12.

Abby Howell was clutch for the Lady Falcons with a team-high 18 kills. Mackenzie Sims followed with a tremendous outing passing out 30 assists with seven kills. LillyAnn Shannon put up 14 kills with two blocks and Avery Ramos did the dirty work nabbing 30 digs.

Tascosa was led by Meredith Sanning’s eye-popping 54 assists. Kassidy Langeland went for 29 digs while Jennifer Zuniga and Berkley Harper each had 12 kills.

Amarillo High downs Dalhart 

Amarillo High made quick work of Dalhart thanks in part to a 25-12, 25-13, 25-13, win on Tuesday night.

The Lady Sandies stay red hot moving to 26-5 overall on the season.

Grace Hughes led the way with 10 kills while Payton Cash dished out 18 assists. Blair Pennington added 12 assists with two aces and Harley Karrh powered home six kills.

Palo Duro, Caprock earn W’s

Both Caprock and Palo Duro walked away with non-district wins on Tuesday.

The Lady Dons earned a four-set victory against Childress, 25-18, 12-25, 25-12, 25-17. With the victory, Palo Duro is now 15-10-1 on the year.

Erin Mims was tough to stop with 21 kills and 14 digs for a double-double. Syvihanna Sutton added a double-double of her own with 22 digs and 15 kills. Aniyah Burley did her job by handing out 34 assists.

Caprock was also victorious celebrating Senior Night by handing River Road a sweep by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-21.

The Lady Longhorns improve to 18-11 overall. The Lady Wildcats fall to 13-10.

Adrienne Madrid had 17 kills with three aces for Caprock. Teammate Lilliana Rangel showed her versatility with 13 digs, eight assists, five kills with four aces.

River Road’s Reese DeHart led the team with 17 assists with four aces and teammate Annie Winton totaled nine digs.
