Big first half helps Randall hold on vs. Wichita Falls
The Randall Raiders took a big lead in the first half thanks to their running game, then held on in the second half to win on the road, beating Wichita Falls 30-28 for their third straight win.
Randall’s Dylan Ray ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter. Ray scored on a 55-yard run only 27 seconds into the game and on a 2-yard run late in the quarter to tie it 14-14. He had a game-high 187 yards on 18 carries.
The Raiders (3-1) dominated the second quarter and that made the difference in the game. They scored 16 unanswered points, as Cayson Butler returned a blocked punt 28 yards for a touchdown which gave them a 30-14 halftime lead.
Wichita Falls (0-4) scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, including a fumble return for a score, to cut it to 30-28, but there was no scoring in the fourth quarter as Randall held on for the victory.
Roberto Chavira had 119 yards on 24 carries for Randall. Jordan Mitchell had 143 yards on 10 carries for Wichita Falls.
West Plains outscores Palo Duro in shortened game
They didn’t get to finish Friday night at Happy State Bank Stadium, but West Plains and Palo Duro both came out of things a little better than they entered them.
In one of two metro games between Class 4A and 5A schools which were halted due to weather, West Plains led Palo Duro 14-7 late in the third quarter before it was stopped due to lightning. The game was not resumed, and West Plains can declare it a victory while Palo Duro can declare it a no contest since it’s a non-district game.
Jordi Hernandez ran for a game-high 159 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries for West Plains (3-1). King Tallant, a former Palo Duro player, ran for the other touchdown for the Wolves.
Defensively, the Wolves had three players with nine tackles.
Palo Duro (1-2) got its lone touchdown on a 16-yard run by quarterback Darien Lewis. The best news offensively for the Dons, though, is they got some significant production from their passing game for the first time this season, as Lewis completed 9-of-14 passes for 140 yards and no interceptions.
Canadian stays undefeated with lopsided win at Perryton
Through the first month of the season, it’s hard to find a team playing better than the No. 1-ranked Canadian Wildcats out of Class 3A Division II.
Four a fourth straight week, Canadian made quick work of its opponent with Perryton being the latest victim in a 63-13 blow out win at Ranger Stadium on Friday night.
A 45-minute weather delay didn’t hamper the Wildcats one bit. Canadian jumped all over the Rangers in a hurry going up 35-0 by halftime.
Quarterback Camren Cavalier continued his fantastic season with an eye-opening performance. It didn’t matter what the Rangers tried to do; Perryton couldn’t stop the dual-threat senior. Cavalier ended his night leaving Perryton baffled totaling 378 yards of offense on his own with eight touchdowns.
Through the air, Cavalier was 9-of-20 for 190 yards with four touchdowns. On the ground, Cavalier rushed it only 13 times for 190 yards with four more scores. Teammate Preston Miller returned from injury and had a nice outing snagging three catches for 70 yards with a scoring catch.
Canadian is off to a 4-0 start on the year. Perryton is still looking for its first win falling to 0-4.
Plainview edges Dumas
Dumas took a 10-point lead over Plainview and looked set to pull off a big road win, but Plainview responded with 16 unanswered points to close the game and stayed undefeated with a 30-24 victory.
Plainview (4-0) took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter, but in a game of wild swings, Dumas (1-3) scored 24 unanswered points to take a 24-14 lead in the third quarter. That didn’t last, though.
The Bulldogs responded with a pair of touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions to close the scoring. Rene Zamarripa ran for 149 yards on 16 carries, including the eventual winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Plainview’s Seth Mayberry threw two touchdown passes.
