Sunray rolls over West Texas High
It was a quick night of work for a potent Sunray offense as the Bobcats scored early and often on the way to routing West Texas High 65-0 on Friday night at Comanche Stadium.
The Bobcats (3-1) played unbelievable on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the Bobcats racked up 644 total yards on 43 plays led by standout quarterback Armando Lujan. The junior gunslinger totaled 470 yards of offense with nine touchdowns all on his own. Lujan threw for 337 yards on 18-of-26 passing with seven touchdowns and ran for 133 yards with two more scores.
Lujan spread around the ball to his multiple weapons. Damian Barragan snagged four catches for 96 yards with a touchdown, Dawson Bennett had three catches for 66 yards and a TD, Ty McDowell had a pair of scores off of four catches for 62 yards, Kagan Davis hauled in four catches for 61 yards and a TD, and Connor Petereit caught two touchdown passes.
Defensively, the Bobcats limited the Comanches (2-2) to 87 total yards. Luis Calderon led the way with 10 tackles, four for a loss with a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
Wellington gets late TD to down Spearman
Wellington was able to survive an upset bid from a gutsy Spearman squad by getting a late touchdown for a 12-6 win in a slugfest on Friday night at Powell Field in Wellington.
Both defenses held their own in this ball game. Wellington tallied only 209 yards of offense while Spearman grinded its way to 153 total yards.
Wellington jumped on the board in the second quarter with a Tarver two-yard run only to see Spearman tie the game, 6-6 before the half when Blayne Klafka caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Cy Davis.
The contest stayed tied, 6-6, until late in the fourth quarter. That’s when Wellington’s Gatlin Guy caught an eight-yard touchdown toss from Carson Tarver to give the Skyrockets the 12-6 lead and the eventual game-winning score with 1:50 to play.
Guy led the Skyrockets with 56 yards on the ground on seven carries. Tarver was 5-of-8 for 39 yards with the lone TD toss.
Wellington improves to 3-1 on the year. The Lynx fall to 1-3.
Farwell stays perfect, beats up Texico, N.M.
Farwell had no problems getting by arch-rival Texico, N.M. running away with a 47-22 home victory on Friday.
In a battle of two towns separated by railroad tracks, Farwell was able to use a balanced attack to give the Wolverines (4-1) their first loss.
The Steers, who are now a perfect 4-0 on the year, opened the game up in the first half taking a 34-14 lead into halftime and never looking back. Quarterback Jonathan Armstrong was efficient going 17-of-22 for 162 yards with two passing touchdowns and rushed for 47 more yards with another score. Senior leader Cory Stancell had another terrific outing grounding out 133 yards on 12 carries with three TDs as well as catching three balls for 67 yards and another score. Stancell also made five tackels on defense with a pick six.
Stratford runs past Vega to stay undefeated
The Stratford Elks kept their winning ways going by blasting Vega 52-7 on Friday night in front of the home fans at E.L. Sam Bass Stadium.
Stratford is still undefeated at 4-0 overall while Vega’s struggles continue moving to 1-3.
Running back Isreal Lincon led the way for the Elks knifing through the Longhorn defense for 112 yards on seven carries with a score. Quarterback Bryce Braden ran for 62 yards with a TD and was solid through the air going 7-of-11 for 153 yards with three touchdowns. Julio Valdez was the go-to target for Braden snagging three catches for 119 yards with a touchdown.
Panhandle rolls over River Road to stay unbeaten
After a slow start, Panhandle was able to pull away from an improving River Road team getting a 65-31 victory at home on Friday.
Panhandle led 14-13 early, but were able to pull away in the second half.
Quarterback Broxton Robinson continued his tear rushing for 157 yards on 23 carries with four touchdowns and threw for 137 yards on 10-of-17 passes. Brayson Choate complimented Robinson’s effort putting up 139 yards on 10 carries with four TDs of his own and ran a kickoff back for a score of 60 yards.
Despite the loss, River Road quarterback Alex Warren went 8-of-20 for 174 yards with two touchdowns and ran for 124 yards with another score.
Panhandle stays hot moving to 4-0. The Wildcats are still looking for their first win falling to 0-4.
Clarendon blows out Smyer for first win
Clarendon took out a lot of frustration from the first three weeks of the season by earning the first win of 2023 by pounding Smyer 64-24 at Broncos Stadium on Friday night.
It’s the Broncos (1-3) first victory under head coach Aaron Wampler.
Quarterback Harrison Howard torched the Bobcat (2-2) secondary going 13-of-20 for 226 yards and four touchdowns. The versatile Lyric Smith also galloped all over Smyer rushing for 226 yards on 19 carries with three TDs, and caught three passes for 58 yards.
Shamrock outguns Sanford-Fritch
Shamrock left its fans happy on Homecoming earning a 42-32 shootout win against Sanford-Fritch on Thursday evening.
The Irish go to 2-2 on the year while Fritch falls to 0-4.
Braxton Allen was the complete difference as the Eagle simply didn’t have an answer for the speedy receiver. Allen snagged five catches for 144 yards with two touchdowns to lead the offense and racked up seven tackles with two sacks on the defensive side of the ball. Quarterback Phillip Cook was superb throwing for 304 yards with four touchdowns and Terry Menefield added three catches for 65 yards with two scores.
