Childress edges Breckenridge
Childress made a late fourth quarter comeback to leave Breckenridge with a big 24-21 victory to stay undefeated on Friday night.
The Bobcats (2-0) took an early 14-0 lead thanks to a Scout Smith 1-yard touchdown run followed by a Drake Rabe 9-yard pitch and catch to Logan Oldham.
The Buckaroos (1-1) didn’t go away rallying back to take a 21-17 lead by the end of the third quarter. However, the Bobcats were able to collect themselves and get the eventual game-winning score in the fourth quarter when Rabe called his own number from 4-yards out.
Rabe had a great night going 18-of-27 for 223 yards with a touchdown pass. Isaiah Jalamo caught three passes for 80 yards and Da’Reon Mathis led the ground attack with 61 yards on 17 carries. The Childress defense played outstanding holding Breckenridge to 122 total yards with Smith racking up 15 tackles with two sacks.
Dalhart holds off Sundown
On a very emotional night at Golden Wolves Stadium, Dalhart was able to hold off Sundown 27-22 on Friday night.
This game was cancelled a year ago after the tragic passing of Dalhart student-athlete Yahir Cancino.
With the Golden Wolves wearing heavy hearts for their fallen teammates, Dalhart was able to put together a huge victory for the community.
Quarterback Kyler Read, a close friend of Cancino, left it all on the field on Friday night with a complete dual-threat effort. The junior was the difference going 11-of-19 for 134 yards passing with a score and piling up 132 yards on only seven carries with two more touchdowns. Defensively, Ben Meyer had a great effort finishing with 11 tackles, three for a loss with two interceptions.
Dalhart is now 2-0 overall. Sundown is 1-1.
Borger blanks River Road
The Borger Bulldogs earned their first win of the season with a shutout road victory at River Road, 42-0, on Friday night.
It’s the first career win for former Tascosa defensive coordinator Dane Hamrick as a head football coach.
Borger quarterback KJ Jennings was extremely efficient through the air going 12-of-14 for 255 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Jennings also ran for 42 more yards with two more scores. Avery Adame added 100 yards on the ground on only 11 carries with a TD and Jaden Daniels snagged five catches for 134 yards with a touchdown.
Borger moves to 1-1 on the year while River Road falls to 0-2.
Muleshoe lights up Lamesa
Through the first two weeks of the season, the Muleshoe Mules are proving they can put up the points.
The Mules scored early and often on the way to a dominating 48-6. Muleshoe put this game to rest early scoring 41 first half points to take a commanding 41-0 lead into halftime.
Quarterback Nathan Martens had a near perfect effort through the air going an eye-opening 17-of-18 for 272 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Mauricio Herrera was Martens’ favorite target on Friday snagging eight catches for 143 yards with a touchdown. Jesus Sigala did his part leading the run game grounding out 120 yards on nine carries with three TDs.
Muleshoe is off to a 2-0 start to 2023. Lamesa falls to 0-2.
