Johnson claims her second consecutive state championship defending her title from last year.
Johnson, the three-time Region I champion, shot an opening round 85 to tie for the lead on Monday. However, the senior came out firing shooting a 76 for a two-day total of 161 to win the state championship ahead of silver medalist Rylee Wood (89-84 – 173) of Garden City.
The Wildorado Lady Mustangs had a solid performance in the school’s first ever appearance at the state tournament. The Lady Mustangs finished eighth as a team thanks to a two-day score of 917. Wildorado was led by Jaci Allen (111-100 – 211).
Canyon Lady Eagles take silver
The Canyon Lady Eagles made the most of their first ever appearance at the UIL Class 4A state girls’ golf tournament at the White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.
Canyon scored a two-day total of 665 to finish behind state champion, Andrews (624), as state runner-up getting a silver medal.
“I’m super excited for this team,” Canyon head coach Ricky Guy said. “It’s incredible to never make it to state and the team comes down here and finish second. We were tied with Canton, and we went out and shot 15 shots better on the second day. We’re all on cloud nine. The team just bared down and took care of business.”
The Lady Eagles shot a 340 during Monday’s first round but came back strong with a 325 on Tuesday’s final 18 holes. Senior Shaylin Schulte led Canyon by firing a 36-round score of 81-79 for a 160. Teammate Lauren Robason followed with an 83-81 for a 164 and Gracie Sutton a severe leg injury to gut out rounds of 89-81 to tally a 170. Rounding out the Lady Eagles were Chloe Stenberg (87-84 – 171) and Hartley Davis (95-96- 191).
Memphis finishes with a bronze medal
Memphis was able to secure a spot on the medal stand by nabbing third place and a bronze medal during the UIL Class 2A state tournament on Monday and Tuesday at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.
The Lady Cyclones shot a 379 on Monday then a 376 on Tuesday for a total of 755. Mason was the UIL Class 2A team state champion with a 655.
Memphis’ Maggie Cook paced the team tallying rounds of 89-87 for a 176. Teammate Kiyonna Matthews followed with a 99-91 – 190.
The Lady Cyclones were making their unprecedented 29th appearance at the UIL state girls’ golf tournament.
State notes
The Amarillo High Lady Sandies placed 10th at the UIL Class 5A state tournament played at the White Wing Golf Club in Austin. AHS tallied a 36-round score of 678. Charlee Thacker highlighted the Lady Sandies by tying for fifth with a 78 on Monday followed a by a 2-under par 70 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 148.
The Bushland Lady Falcons finished sixth with a 36-hole tally of 803 in their first ever UIL Class 3A state tournament appearance at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin. Senior Logan Culpepper ended a stellar career with an eighth-place finish by shooting an 84 on Monday and an 81 on Tuesday for a 165.
Playing as an individual, Childress senior Elena Jurado shot rounds of 94-83 for a 177 at the Class 3A state tournament.
Playing as an individual, Randall’s Kimber Nunn had rounds of 90 and 91 for a 36-hole total of 181 at the Class 4A state tournament.
