Winfrey was a part of a big part of the Lady Eagles successful afternoon setting three of those record-setting by herself.

The junior standout ran away from all competitors to set a new record in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:15.65. A little later, the three-time state champion from a year ago set the 300-hurdles record running a 46.11. Winfrey was then part of the 1600 meter relay team with Megan Pullen, Samara Ramirez, and Thalia Solis, that broke the 1600 meter relay record clocking a 4:03.56.

Coach Ray Baca : “I was really pleased with how our team performed. Meet records come and go, but I was focused on how we are doing, and how much we’re improving. The goal right now is to be peaking for regional. Abree is one our athletes that’s really coming on. She had two extra weeks this year for track so she’s running faster now then she did at this time last year. Coaching Abree is special. She is a once in lifetime type athlete. Her parents have bought in, and she’s bought in. She puts in a good summer of cross country, then she plays basketball. Once she is out of basketball she comes into track and gets stronger. Abree is such a competitor and wants to get better and is well prepared for every race. She takes care of the small things and we’re expecting more great times this weekend.”

Winfrey: “Area was challenging. We haven’t had that many hot days to work out in, and it was very warm. But we all ran extremely well, and we just want to get better. This team is excited. We know what we have ahead of us heading into the regional meet, and we’re all focused. For myself, I’ve already set new personal-records this year. I didn’t do that till state last year. I just want to keep getting faster and help our team the best I can get back to Austin.”
