It was a dominant performance from the West Texas A&M’s men and women’s track teams at the Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field meet at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

The No. 7-ranked Lady Buffs won their unprecedented eighth straight LSC Indoor championship, scoring a program-record 234.5 points, 130 more than second-place Angelo State.

Taylor Nelloms had a busy Sunday as she finished in the Top 3 in two events including a win in the triple jump. The sophomore is the new national leader in the event after jumping 41-8.75 on her sixth and final attempt.

Zada Swoopes won the shot put for the second straight year with a record-breaking performance. The senior broke her own LSC and program record on her sixth attempt with a mark of 53-6.25.

Florance Uwajeneza continued to show her dominance in the distance events with a win in the mile. The junior ran 4:59.79 to break Miriea Guarnerr’s program record of 5:00.18 set back in 2014.

On the men’s side, the No. 4-ranked Buffs won six events on Sunday as they won the program’s third LSC Indoor title. The Buffs scored a program-record 198 points to defeat Texas A&M-Commerce by 80 points.

WT standout sprinter Benjamin Azamati was the highlight of the meet. Azamati broke the LSC meet record in the 60-meter dash clocking a 6.61. He then returned to the track to break the school and LSC record in the 200-meters out of Lane 6. He became the first runner in conference history to go under 21 seconds in the event as he ran 20.97. Aryee also finished seventh in 22.23.

Amarillo High graduate and WT long distance runner Butare Rugenerwa picked up his first career individual title in the mile with a time of 4:16.55.

The Buffs and Lady Buffs will compete at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 11-13 at Birmingham, Ala.
