During a very slow time in the sports world, Spearman junior-to-be Brenen Thompson has been able to keep the Texas Panhandle entertained by his non stop Twitter timeline filled with multiple college football offers.
Thompson‘s had Zoom calls with University of Oklahoma head football coach and Muleshoe graduate Lincoln Riley, Texas Christian University offensive coordinator and Snyder graduate Sonny Cumbie, among many more.
Thompson has drawn an invite to the 2022 All-American Bowl, showcasing the best high school talent across the United States.
The multi-sport athlete and four star talent has the nation’s attention drawing 18 college football offers since March 15 that include the University of Alabama, Auburn, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
“When Alabama offered it was shocking,” Thompson said. “I didn’t think Bama would ever offer or be this early. When it came, I was stunned. But overall this experience has been crazy. I had four other offers on the same day as Bama. There’s been something new every day. I’m humbled and blessed to be going through this.”
To think it all started with what he did at the Canadian Wildcat Relays on March 12.
For anyone that hasn’t seen the video, it’s the definition of the popular term “social distancing” so frequently used during these odd times.
Thompson blew the field away in both the 100 and 200 meter sprints, blazing an eye-opening 10.18 in the 100, followed by another outstanding performance by leaving the pack with a 21.40 in the 200.
“I feel that video helped for sure,” Thompson said. “Track times don’t lie. It’s definitely something coaches love. It’s really helped my recruitment.”
Thompson is the fourth athlete in the past three years to be a highly touted recruit from the Amarillo-area. Tascosa’s King Doerue, now at Purdue, Wellington’s Trevor Roberson, now at Texas Tech, and Thompson’s Hansford County neighbor Jalin Conyers of Gruver, an Oklahoma signee, all had 20-plus Division I offers, opening the door for Thompson’s opportunities.
“Those guys definitely paved the way,” said Thompson who’s tallied 3,312 all-purpose yards with a total of 41 touchdowns in his brief two years with the Lynx. “I’ve been able to talk with Jalin on what it’s like to go through this process, and what was important to him. It’s good to have someone like him to talk to. Being so close to Gruver, a lot of these college coaches know where Gruver is now, and know where Spearman is. It’s been a blessing to have Jalin and the rest of those guys blow up.”
Thompson will be a junior come fall for the Lynx football team. So right now, patience is his biggest prowess. There’s no rush for the 5-foot-11, 170 pounder to make a decision.
“He’s handling it better than me,” Spearman head football coach Aaron Witten said. “It’s new territory for me as well. I’m learning and asking what the rules are. But Brennen is cool, calm, and collected through this all. Not me. I’m trying to keep up with messages, and I’m nervous for him, but he isn’t bothered a bit.”
Thompson echoed his coaches comment.
“I don’t want to cut any loose ends,” Thompson said. “I’m thankful for every offer I’ve gotten so far. I just want to be smart, handle this the right way and stay in contact with every school.”
