Tascosa is on one of the great playoff runs in Amarillo ISD history winning seven playoff games the past 13 months. With a convincing victory against Flower Mound Marcus, 46-14, in a regional semifinal Saturday, the Rebels kept pace with Austin Westlake for the most playoff wins in all of Class 6A Division II over the past two years.

Breaking ground

Dumas runs on fo fhe field before its Class 4A Division I regional semifinal against Decatur on Friday. [John Moore/ Press Pass Sports]

With each win the Dumas football program keeps rewriting its record books. Thanks to the thrilling last second win against Decatur 38-35, on Friday in the Class 4A Division I regional semi’s, Dumas moved to 13-0 for the first time in school history. Yes, Dumas did win state titles in 1961 and 1962, but those teams didn’t reach 13 wins. In the modern era of the Texas High School playoffs, this will be the first time the Demons will play In December.

Tradition… Part I

Canadian coach Chris Koetting gets the celebratory bath after the Wildcats downed Cisco on Friday. [Alan Hale/ Press Pass Sports.

Thanks to a 55-28 thumping of Cisco in the Class 3A Division II regional semifinals, the Canadian Wildcats are headed back to the state quarterfinals for a seventh straight year. If that wasn’t impressive enough, Canadian is making its unprecedented 15th trip to a quarterfinal since 1998.

Tradition… Part II

Stratford celebrates the bidistrict trophy earlied in the playoffs. [David Erickson/ Press Pass Sports]

Not to be outdone is the Stratford Elks. Stratford downed rival Gruver 25-6 in a Class 2A Division II regional semifinal Friday, punching the their ticket back to a state quarterfinal for the 14th time since 1999. Between Stratford and Canadian, the two power programs have made a combined 29 trips to the fourth round of the postseason.

Achieving goals

Wellington first-year coach Greg Proffitt and the Skyrockets are 12-1 this season. [Mackenzie Teal/ Press Pass Sports]

When head coach Greg Proffitt took over for Wellington’s legendary coach Wade Williams last spring, he was well aware of the Skyrockets tradition. He also knew he was inheriting a team with a bitter taste in its mouth after falling in the regional semifinal to Hamlin last season.

Proffitt and his team have been motivated all year to get past the regional semi’s this year, and did just that Friday night with a whipping of Windthorst, 44-14. The Skyrockets have now given themselves a long awaited rematch against Hamlin in the Region II Class 2A Division II state quarterfinals.

Streaking

McLean’s Ben Crockett gets loose against White Deer in a state quarterfinal on Friday. [Bobby Brown/ Texas 1A Fan.

McLean once again took it to district rival White Deer 59-12 on Friday night during a Class 1A Division I state quarterfinal. That victory pushes the Tigers postseason win streak to a Texas Panhandle-best eight straight dating back to last season when they won the Division I state title. McLean’s last playoff loss came to Happy, 86-40, in a 2017 state quarterfinal on Dec. 2, 2017.
