The No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs closed out a recent homestand getting a three-game sweep of St. Edward’s in a Lone Star Conference series on Monday and Wednesday at Schaeffer Park.

The Lady Buffs won both games of a doubleheader Monday with a 5-2 win in game one, followed by a 9-1 dominating victory in the night cap. After rainy conditions pushed game three to Wednesday, the Lady Buffs completed the sweep thanks to a 2-0 shut out of the Hilltoppers.

The Lady Buffs (38-4 overall) continue to lead the LSC with a 30-3 record. WTAMU now hits the road to open a three-game series at Texas A&M-International starting Saturday.

Game 1 and 2

WTAMU opened the series getting a smashing performance from slugger Emilee Boyer. Boyer went deep in the first and third innings with solo shots that helped the Lady Buffs take a 5-1 advantage.

On top of her massive offensive effort, Boyer (17-1) was dealing in the circle throwing a complete game while holding SEU to two runs with five strikeouts.

In game two, Gabriella Valforte and Diana Murtha feasted on Hilltopper pitching in a 9-1 victory. Valforte was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Murtha followed going 3-for-3 with a homer and a pair of RBIs of her own.

Heidi Vortherms (13-3) threw six innings scattering six hits giving up a run with four K’s to earn the win.

Game 3

In the series finale the Lady Buffs used very good pitching and just enough offense to earn the sweep of the Hilltoppers on Wednesday.

Once again, the long ball bailed WTAMU out in clutch situations. The first homer came in the bottom of the first on a solo shot from Lauren Granger.

WTAMU then picked up some much-needed insurance in the bottom of the sixth when Murtha delivered a solo shot to right-center putting the Lady Buffs up 2-0.

Freshman pitcher Ashley Mandell (8-0) made that lead standup with an outstanding outing. Mandell stayed unbeaten on the year working a complete game shut out with five strikeouts.
