Canadian sweeps team titles 

At an area meet star-studded with high-level talent, the Canadian boys and girls track and field team had extremely impressive showings bringing home team championships at the District 1-3A/ 2-3A Area track and field meet at West Texas A&M on a warm Friday afternoon.

In front of a packed house at WTAMU, the Canadian Wildcats, who won the district championship last week, posted 125 points to beat second-place Idalou (100) by 20 points to claim the area crown.

The Wildcats rode the back of one of the versatile Preston Neumeier and Camden Cook. Neumeier is having a track season to remember and that didn’t stop Friday as the senior highlighted the meet with piling up four gold medals and a silver.

Neumeier opened Friday winning the long jump with a leap of 23-feet-4 3/4 inches. He took his second gold popping off a 46-8 on his second attempt to win the triple jump event.

During the running events, Neumeier and the sprint relay earned a silver medal (42.98) before Neumeier claimed his third gold in the 300-meter hurdles clocking a 40.38. He then ended his fantastic afternoon as part of a gold medal mile relay team with Easton Galla, Cook, and Camren Cavalier running to a season-best performance of 3:24.62.

Cook followed Neumeier two gold medals and a silver. Cook was on the sprint relay team as well as the mile relay, and found the medal stand by winning the 400-meter race with a 49.41.

Bushland’s Tanner Adams was able to display his speed winning a pair of gold medals to advance to the regional meet. Adams blazed to a gold medal time of 10.68 to win the 100-meter dash and then followed that effort with another gold medal time of 22.04 to hold off Idalou’s Kutter Houchin (22.26).

On the girls’ side, the Canadian Lady Cats had an all-around team performance of 112 points that edged Shallowater (101.5) to win the area championship.

Junior long distance runner Konnar McLendon scored the Lady Cats 20 points on her own with two gold medal performances. On Friday morning, McClendon left the field in the dust running to a personal-best 11:33.62 for a gold medal in the 3200-meter. In the afternoon, McClendon once again was victorious this time in the 1600-meter race clocking a 5:32.11 for the win.

The Lady Cats also saw their relay teams come through in a big way. The 800-meter relay team of Kylie Cavalier, Jacy Long, Delaney Huntress and Samantha Krehbiel ran a season-best time of 1:44.42 for the win. The sprint relay team (49.83) took silver, and the mile relay squad of Elizabeth Guerrero, Arionna Black, Huntress and Sharlene Guerrero sealed the team win with a season-best 4:02.49 for a silver medal.

Bushland’s Leah Ruthardt and Shallowater’s Makki Hart were two highlights as well. Ruthardt punched her ticket to regionals in four events winning three golds and a bronze. Ruthardt earned a bronze in the long jump (16-10) to start Friday, but it was the running where she shined.

Ruthardt edged Hart in an exciting photo finish 100-meter dash blazing a 11.91 to Hart’s 11.96. Ruthardt then dominated the 200-meter dash with a gold medal time of 24.87 and was also part of the Lady Falcons sprint relay team that took gold with a 48.47.

Hart, an Oklahoma State signee, bounced back from the 100-meter dash to shine in the 400-meter race thanks to a winning time of 56.15 and then anchored Shallowater’s mile relay team to gold with a season-best time of 3:58.72.

In the field events, Taylor Wiseman of Childress was dominant. Wiseman, one of the top throwers in the entire state, tossed a 153-8 for a gold in the discus. Wiseman won her second gold medal in the shot put with ease as well launching a 44-8.

The Region I-3A track and field meet is set for Friday and Saturday on the campus of Abilene Christian University.

District 3-5A/ 4-5A

Amarillo High track teams make it a clean sweep 

All four Amarillo ISD schools made their mark with Amarillo High leading the way during the District 3-5A/ 4-5A Area track and field meet at PlainsCapital-Park Lowrey Field in Lubbock on Friday afternoon.

Just like last week’s district meet, the Sandies and Lady Sandies were able to walk out as team champions. The Lady Sandies tallied 137 points for the area championship followed by rival Tascosa with 99 points.

Keely Harper and Sierra Cornell combined to qualify to regionals in six events that pushed AHS to the team title. Cornell won the 800-meter run pacing a time of 2:19.54 and finished with a bronze in the 400-meter race (1:00.24).

Harper ran a strong 100-meter hurdle race to earn a gold with a time of 15.26 then followed that with a silver in the 300-meter hurdles (45.39).

Cornell and Harper won their respective second gold medal as part of a team effort on the mile relay that clocked a season-best winning time of 3:58.55.

Leading Tascosa to a second-place overall finish was standout Saphina Stanley accounting for 35 of the Lady Rebels 99 points.

Like she has all track season, Stanley shined at the area meet qualifying for regionals in five events while racking up two gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze. Stanley popped off a leap of 37-5 3/4 to win the triple jump and hit a 18-8 1/4 for a silver in the long jump.

In the running events, Stanley blazed to a gold medal time of 57.25 for a win in the 400-meter dash and was part of the silver medal mile relay team (4:06.42) as well as the sprint relay team that finished third (50.48).

Caprock’s Cailyn Lott also qualified for regionals winning the pole vault event clearing 10-feet-6 inches.

In boys’ action, AHS totaled 149 points to win the area title with Abilene High coming in second with 116.

University of Texas commit, and Sandies long distance runner Adam Burlison was on full display leaving Lubbock with three gold medals.

Burlison dominated the long-distance events winning the 3200-meter run with a time of 9:56.16, clocked a 1:56.87 for his second gold in the 800-meter and closed his afternoon with a time of 4:33.43 in the 1600-meter race.

Teammate Pius Vokes and his speed landed him at the regional meet in three events. Vokes was part of the Sandies silver medal sprint relay squad (41.88). Vokes clocked a 10.54 in the 100-meter dash for his second silver and finished third in the 200-meter race with a 21.79.

Rylan Leathers added to the Sandies big day winning gold in the 300-hurdles with a 40.63 and John Hierholzer won the long jump with a 23-7 3/4 and was a part of the sprint relay team.

Palo Duro’s Vern Blair is headed to regionals in two events after a superb afternoon. Blair won the 110-hurdles with an impressive time of 14.39 and was on the 800-meter relay team for the Dons that finished third (1:29.83).

The Region I-5A track and field meet is set for Friday and Saturday back at PlainsCapital-Park Lowrey Field in Lubbock.

Dumas boys, Canyon girls win area championships 

The Canyon Lady Eagles kept a stronghold on winning team championships while the Dumas Demons had to fight to the finish for a team title at the District 3-4A/ 4-4A Area Track and Field meet in Andrews on Thursday.

The Demons were able take the team title by an exciting one point 89 to 88 over Midland Greenwood.

It came down to the days last race and in that mile relay it was the Dumas squad of Andrew Flores, Ivan Nava, Dustin Coey and Imanol Marquez that left it all on the track running to a season-best time of 3:21.59 for the gold medal edging out Greenwood’s time of 3:21.84.

That was the end of what was a great day for Marquez who also qualified for regionals with a silver in the 100-meter dash and was a part of a bronze medal sprint relay team (42.94) or the Demons.

Teammate Lance Ottinger did his part winning gold in the pole vault clearing 14-feet.

Individually, it has hard to find a better performance than Randall’s Collin Miller and Canyon’s Alex Niemiec.

Miller made it a sweep in field events claiming gold in the triple jump with a 44-11 1/2 then leaping to a gold medal jump of 22-1 3/4 in the long jump. Miller was also a part of the Raiders sprint relay that found the gold medal stand blazing to a time of 42.12.

Niemiec helped the Eagles make it a sweep in the long-distance events. Niemiec went double gold in the 800-meter run with an outstanding time of 1:57.17 and earned his second trip to the medal stand with another win in the 1600-meter pacing a 4:33.17.

Hereford’s Luis Garcia was a gold medal winner in the discus (144-3) and West Plains standout Bryce Williams claimed the high jump championship (6-foot-6).

Over on the girls’ side, the Canyon Lady Eagles scored 122 points which was enough to hold off Andrews (110 points) for the team championship.

It was the same cast of characters leading the charge for the Lady Eagles. Long distance standout and University of Missouri signee Hannah Stuart went double gold.

Stuart won the 3200-meter race pacing a gold medal time of 11:05.60. Stuart then found herself back on the podium winning the 1600-meter run with a great time of 4:58.34.

Brooklyn Kinsey followed up on her exceptional district meet with another strong showing for Canyon. Kinsey swept the hurdle events thanks to a running a 16.04 in the 100-meter hurdles and a 44.87 in the 300-meter hurdle race.

Kinsey won her third gold medal as a part of the Lady Eagles exceptional mile relay team that ran a season-best 3:57.53 and was second in the long jump (16-10).

Pampa’s 800-meter relay team of Yahaira Zamudio, Berlin Bartlett, Briley Daniels and Katlyn Magers are headed to regionals with a silver medal clocking a 1:44.44. The Lady Harvesters sprint relay team earned a bronze to also qualify and Randall’s Sophia Bush cleared 11-6 in the pole vault for a gold medal to advance.

The Region I-4A track and field meet is set for Friday and Saturday back at PlainsCapital-Park Lowrey Field in Lubbock.

Gruver sweeps area championships

The Gruver track and field teams put on quite the show that led to a sweep of the District 1-2A/ 2-2A Area track and field championships on Wednesday at Wellington.

The Lady Hounds tallied 142 points to beat rival Stratford which scored 122.

Gruver dominated the relay events winning the sprint relay with a time of 51.10 and the 800-meter relay clocking a 1:52.22. The Lady Hounds then earned silver in the mile relay (4:29.27).

Individually, West Texas High’s Emorie McNabb continues to impress. McNabb went double gold with a 12.42 in the 100-meter dash followed by a 25.85 in the 200-meter race.

Sunray standout Mia Gray continues to show why she’s one of the best throwers in the state. Gray won a pair of golds launching a 134-7 to win the discus and a 40-11 1/2 for a gold in the shot put.

Like the girls team, the Gruver Greyhounds were able to win the boys title by 22 points over Wellington. The Greyhounds scored 143 points to the Skyrockets 121.

Michael McCloy was phenomenal once again for Gruver in the area meet piling up four gold medals. McCloy cleared 15-6 for a gold in the pole vault and leaped 20-9 to win the long jump. In the running events, he made it a sweep of the hurdle races with a 15.60 to win the 110-hurdles and a 42.41 for a win in the 300-meter hurdles.

Booker’s Adrian Rosales left Wellington with three Silver medals. Rosales took his first silver in the 3200-meter race (10:13.58), in the afternoon he found second place again in the 800-meter run (2:05.61) and was second in the 1600-meter race (4:49.26).

District 3-2A/ 4-2A

Farwell girls, New Deal boys win area titles 

The Farwell Lady Blue were impressive as were the New Deal Lions as both programs won District 1-3A/ 2-3A Area track and field championships in Floydada on Thursday.

The Lady Blue stacked up 154 points to hold off Panhandle (142) by 12 points.

Isabella Jaime and Lexi Wade were highlights for Farwell. Jaime won gold in the 400-meter run with a 59.95 while Wade found gold in the 1600-meter run pacing a 5:42.34 and a silver in the 3200-meter run (12:45.48).

Panhandle’s stellar freshman Carly Land continues to dominate. Land won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.95. Land was a part of the gold medal 400 and mile relay teams that clocked a 48.99 and 4:02.69 and then won her fourth gold in the pole vault clearing 10-6.

Vega’s Jaz Martinez went double gold with a victory in the 100-meter hurdles thanks to a 15.87 and then another gold in the high jump leaping 5-2. Boys Ranch also had two gold medal winners with Aletha Usanga blazing a 12.55 for first place in the 100-meter dash with teammate Saige Conner winning the 800-meter race (2:28.42).

The New Deal boys ran away from the competition with 162 points to Panhandle’s runner-up finish of 83.

One of the standouts of Thursday was Vega’s Diego Martinez. Martinez left Floydada with heavy hardware racking up three gold medals and a silver to advance to regionals.

Martinez won the high jump event clearing 6-4, then won the triple jump with a leap of 42-5 1/2. Martinez won his third gold in the 110-hurdle race with a 15.00 and took silver in the 300-meter hurdles (40.91).

Boys Ranch runner Wetera Schlachter won a pair of gold medals. Schlachter ran a 2:01.56 for the 800-meter championship and followed that with another title in the 1600-meter race clocking a 4:42.32.

The Region I-2A track and field meet is set for Friday and Saturday at West Texas A&M.

District 1-1A/ 2-1A

Silverton dominates area 

The Silverton Owls and Lady Owls didn’t let rainy conditions put a damper on their parade with both teams winning the District 1-1A/ 2-1A Area track and Field titles in White Deer on Tuesday.

The Owls finished with 138 points which was well ahead of Follett’s 104.

Senior standout Sawyer Francis will be headed back to regionals once again after leaving White Deer with four gold medals. Francis swept the hurdle events with a gold time of 14.52 in the 110-hurdles followed by a 1:37.99 in the 300-hurdles. He was also part of the 800-meter relay team that clocked a winning time of 1:37.99 and won the long jump event at 19-7.

On the girls side, the Lady Owls scored 136 points to beat McLean’s 103.

It was the Brenna Francis show from Silverton despite the rain. Francis punched her way to Levelland and the regional meet in five events.

Francis won three golds in the 100 hurdles (15.47), the triple jump (33-6) and the long jump (15-8 1/4) and was a part of the 800-meter relay winning squad that ran a 1:55.49. Francis also took silver as a part of the sprint relay team (53.40).

District 3-1A/ 4-1A

Happy boys, Wildorado girls are area champs 

The Happy Cowboys and the Wildorado Lady Mustangs left Tulia as District 1-3A/ District 2-3A Area track and field champions on Thursday afternoon.

Wildorado racked up 107 points for the team title. Giselle Esparza found the medal stand four separate times for the Lady Mustangs. Esparza won the 100-meter hurdles (15.93), and the triple jump (33-5 3/4). Esparza also left with two silver medals in the 300-meter hurdles (47.75) and the long jump (15-7 1/2).

Springlake-Earth’s highly decorated and nine-time state champion runner Taytum Goodman dominated the long-distance events as expected. Goodman left the field behind in the 3200-meter race with a 11:28.91, won another gold in the 800-meter run clocking a 2:19.66 and finished her day on the gold medal stand in the 1600-meter thanks to a 5:14.46.

The Happy Cowboys destroyed the competition with 157 points. The Happy 800-meter relay (1:36.57) and mile relay (3:41.78) each won gold and Hayes Bressler cleared 14-feet for a win in the pole vault.

The Region I-1A track and field meet is set for Friday and Saturday on the campus of South Plains College in Levelland.

Ascension Academy rolls in district meet

It was a great Friday for the Ascension Academy boys and girls track teams as the Cardinals program made it a sweep at the TAPPS District 1-2A track and field meet at McMurry University in Abilene.

The Lady Cardinals posted 149 points to win the district title while the Cardinals scored 106 points to make the sweep complete.

Mya Velazquez was unreal on Friday. Velazquez swept the hurdle gold medals racing to a 17.15 for a win in the 100-meter hurdles and another gold in the 300-meter (49.68). The sophomore was then part of the mile relay team of Gabrielle Parker, Lexi Pennington and Audrina Pennington that won gold with a 4:33.08.

Parker also took silver in the 100-meter dash (13.07), a silver in the triple jump (36-10) and a bronze in the long jump (15-8 1/2).

Elijah Lara had a big day on the boys side. Lara earned silver in both hurdle events. Lara ran a 15.03 in the 110-hurdles for a second-place finish and a 43.23 for another silver in the 300-meter race. Lara also took silver in the triple jump with a 39-9.

The TAPPS Class 2A North Regional track and field meet will be on April 26.
