WTAMU Lady Buffs win third straight Lone Star Conference Tournament title

The No. 6-ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs played resounding volleyball over the past three days to prove just who runs the Lone Star Conference.

Thanks to convincing sweeps over Texas Woman’s, Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Lady Buffs were able to bring home their third straight LSC Tournament title and the 18th in program history.

The Lady Buffs weren’t challenged over the last three days at host school Dallas Baptist. WTAMU opened the tournament downing TWU in a quarterfinal, 25-10, 25-23, 25-15. The Lady Buffs then swept Angelo State in Friday’s semifinals, 25-19, 25-23, 25-17, and capped off the weekend with a Saturday championship easing past Texas A&M-Kingsville, 25-16, 25-16, 25-10.

Canyon graduates Bryli Contreras and Carly Evetts were named to the All-Tournament team while standout outside hitter Torrey Miller was tabbed as the Tournament MVP for the third year in a row.

By winning the LSC Tournament title, the defending Division II national champion Lady Buffs league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship.

The Division II tournament bracket will be announced at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

As for Saturday’s sweep of the Javelinas, WT hit .287 in the championship match with 40 kills on 94 attempts with 13 errors to go along with 49 digs, 34 assists, seven blocks and four service aces while TAMUK had 25 kills on 108 swings with 16 errors to hit .083 with 34 digs, 24 assists and two blocks.

Miller and Evetts tallied nine kills apiece. Ainsley Malis paced the offense with 16 assists while Highland Park graduate Emma Patterson had a match-high two aces. Contreras hit the floor for 11 digs to lead the back row while Patterson and Miller each contributed 10 digs apiece.

The Lady Buffs added to some already impressive LSC Tournament numbers. WTAMU is now 56-11 all-time in the LSC Tournament and has the highest winning percentage in league history at 83.5 percent. Head coach Kendra Potts moves to 11-2 all-time in the LSC Tournament and Miller produced two double-doubles against TWU and ASU.
