Palo Duro and Dumas combine for 5 wins at 7-on-7 State Football Tournament

The Palo Duro Dons and Dumas Demons represented the Texas Panhandle well with superb play during the 7-on-7 State Football Tournament at Veterans Park in College Station from Thursday through Saturday.

The Dons and Demons combined for five total wins going against elite completion with both teams making the championship brackets of their respective divisions.

Palo Duro, which was making its second straight trip to College Station went 2-1 during Friday’s Division I pool play. The Dons performance was highlighted by outstanding defense by pitching two shutouts in victories against Tyler 34-0, and North Forney 25-0. Senior-to-be linebacker Keanan Posey had one of the moments of the weekend for the Dons returning a tipped pass for pick-six against North Forney.

The lone loss during pool action for Palo Duro came against College Park, 25-24.

In Saturday’s championship bracket play, the Dons run came to an end in the at the hands of eventual Division I runner-up Allen, 28-19.

Making a Texas Panhandle best seventh straight showing at the state tournament, the Dumas Demons showed a veteran presence behind star quarterback Colton Mills. The Demons were sensational during Thursday’s Division II action winning their pool by going unbeaten getting wins over Van Alstyne 26-12, then beating Bay City 13-6, and took down Chapel Hill 21-14. 

Dumas, however, wasn’t able to sustain that moment into Friday’s championship bracket falling in the opening round to Somerset 21-20. 

In Division III, Olton had a rough go in its first appearance in College Station. The Mustangs went 0-4 over Thursday and Friday, dropping pool play games to De Leon 32-20, West Rusk 30-19, and Van Vleck 18-12.

Playing in the consolation bracket, Olton then fell to Rice Consolidated 26-18 in the opening round.
