West Texas High has promoted defensive coordinator James Henton to be its new head football coach.

Henton was approved during a board meeting Monday night.

Henton makes the move to head football coach just a week after former head coach Steven Flowers announced he was leaving the school after six seasons to take the offensive coordinator job at Seminole.

“It’s bitter sweet for me,” Henton said. “I feel honored that athletic director Jimmy Amaro and superintendent Bill Wiggins would consider me. I’ll miss Steven (Flowers), he was great to work with and a great coach, but I‘m excited for this opportunity going forward.”

Henton is no stranger to the head coaching world. He guided the Booker Kiowas to a successful five-year run from 2010-2014. While leading the Kiowas, Henton, a 1990 graduate of Booker, posted a 40-18 record, took Booker to the playoffs four straight years, and most notably during that run, coached quarterback Hunter Lile and wide receiver Jared Reagan, who finished their careers this year as the state’s all-time leading passer and receiver, respectively.

Henton has been on the Comanches staff as the defensive coordinator the past three years.
