On the course: After grabbing gold in Computer Applications at the UIL State Academic meet 10 days prior, Johnson showed her prowess on the golf course as well, shooting a 36-hole total that earned her gold and individual state title at the UIL Class 1A State Golf Tournament on the Plum Creek Course in Kyle.

The two-time Region I-1A champion was looking to build on her success at state last year where she finished seventh in the rain-shortened meet. This year the junior golfer made sure she was in the hunt carding an opening round 81, then following that up with an 86 for a two-day score of 167. Johnson’s win was the first gold medalist in girls golf for Happy in 43 years when Cindy Craig won back-to-back titles in 1978-1979.

Coach Barry Stevens: “She and the team started off rough on the first day. We started on the backside and Halee really came on when she played the front side. She played really well and was just able to stay in contention. She’s been a leader of this program since last year. She’s a fun person to be around and always has a smile on her face. Halee is one of those that is always there for anyone who needs it.”

Johnson: “My mentality going in was to not make a lot of mistakes and stay away from a high number. I was able to play pretty well and win. I was also able to play with my teammates. I wrote an essay earlier this year and it was about goals. One of those goals was to win state as a senior. I didn’t think I’d do it this year. So getting this gold medal means so much. I’ve been wanting this seventh grade.”
