Dumas sweeps District 3-5A Wrestling Championship

The Dumas boys and girls team’s made it a clean sweep taking both championships at the District 3-5A Wrestling Tournament at Randall on Friday.

The Dumas boys totaled 254 points to outlast second place and defending UIL Class 5A state. champion Randall (215), while the Dumas girls squad racked up 170 points to edge Caprock (159).

The Demons brought home two individual district winners. Bronson Baxter was the 145-pound champion, and teammate Andre Garbalena beat Canyon’s Zane Sumpter with a pin at the 3:25 mark.

Randall’s Ashton Bennert, who won the 106-pound state championship last year, moved to the 113-pound class this year and won gold.

Bennert took down Borger’s Hunter Bogner by a fall in 37 seconds. Bennert’s teammate, Aidan Medina, a state runner-up last season, made a jump in class to 126 this year. Medina had no problems in his new division beating Amarillo High’s Jaden Valdez by a fall in 5:49.

In girls action, the Demonettes had two individual district champions. Serese Guillen won the 95-pound division defeating Borger’s Britley Lopez by pin fall at the 4:46 mark. Teammate Emily Loya then made quick work of Mia Alonzo of Borger, scoring a pin fall in 55 seconds to win the 128-pound division.

Randall’s Jaryn Ortegon, a state champion from last year, regained her district crown in the 102-pound class defeating Caprock’s Victoria Baldivia.

Speaking of Caprock. Team leader and defending state champion, Tatiana Garcia, won district in the 119-pound division cruising past Kennedi Purcell of Dumas by a fall in 1:22.

Garcia stays perfect on the year at 33-0.

The top four competitors from each division qualify out to the Region I-5A Wrestling Tournament set for Friday and Saturday at El Paso Bel Air High School.
