Adam Cummings has spent 22 years coaching football and track, with stops at Sundown, Hale Center, Canyon, and Canyon Junior High before joining West Plains High School.
His career is filled with unforgettable moments, including a six-overtime win over Farwell in 2021 and a goal-line stand victory over Stephenville last season.
Another highlight was West Plains’ first-ever team victory over Palo Duro in 2022. While he’s faced tough opponents like Liberty Christian and Celina in 2024, as well as Canadian in 2015, Coach Cummings thrives on the challenges that come with leading his teams to success.

A Coach Who Can Name That Tune
Described by his players as organized, intense, and loving, Coach Cummings is full of surprises. He’s a master at “Name That Tune” and enjoys woodworking in his free time.
His favorite pre-game meal takes him back to his high school days at Main Street Pizza in Lockney, TX—a spot he still visits when seeing family.
A man of tradition, he always blows his wife a kiss after the National Anthem and chews a piece of gum handed to him by Coach Albracht before kickoff. While he admits he can’t imagine doing anything other than coaching, his dedication and unique personality make him a standout leader.

Coach Cummings’ philosophy is rooted in teamwork and surrounding yourself with great people. He believes, “You can’t do it alone—you need great people supporting you, pushing you, holding you accountable, loving you, challenging you, and working with you.”

For Coach Cummings, the best part of coaching at West Plains is the unwavering support from the community and the high standards they uphold. He values the work ethic and character of Texas Panhandle athletes, which he believes set them apart from other regions.
His favorite drill, the ½ Line Drill, challenges his players to refine their skills and build confidence.

With 90s alternative and grunge music playing in his office, Coach Cummings creates an environment of focus and determination. Through his leadership, West Plains continues to grow as a team and a community, striving for excellence every step of the way.
