Randall surprises Dumas

In the district opener at Happy State Bank Stadium, Randall kept Dumas from getting to 20.

Randall overcame an early pick six by Dumas and held on with a stellar defensive second half to score a 17-13 victory. Not only did the Raiders (5-2, 1-0 in district) put the previous week’s loss at Class 3A power Canadian behind them, they stopped the district winning streak of Dumas (4-3, 0-1) at 19 games.

Dumas got off on the right foot, though, as Emmanuel Ibanez intercepted Randall’s Nathan White and returned it for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. But Randall bounced back, and took a 14-13 lead with 52 seconds left in the first half as White threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Baker.

The defenses took over in the second half. Randall in particular came up big, making three interceptions and blocking two field goals. Ilir Haliti had two interceptions for the Raiders.

Oliver Ortiz had six catches for 123 yards for Dumas.

 

Pampa routs Hereford

Pampa stayed hot offensively to open district at Hereford, racking up 566 yards of total offense to roll to a 53-20 win.

Quarterback Michael Campos had another big game for the Harvesters (5-2, 1-0) both passing and running the ball. Campos completed 12-of-16 passes for 190 yards and four touchdowns to four receivers.

Freshman Max Neff continued to produce huge running the ball, racking up 254 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Campos had 117 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries.

Pampa junior inside linebacker Bensin Martinez had a huge defensive game. Martinez had 20 tackles, including nine for losses along with three sacks.

Hereford stayed winless on the season, falling to 0-7 and 0-1.

District 2-4A Division II

West Plains falls at Seminole

In the first district game in school history, West Plains gave a strong effort against a good Seminole team, but it wasn’t enough for the first district win in school history.

West Plains had a solid offensive game, but Seminole had a better one, as the Wolves fell 38-28 to see their three-game winning streak come to an end on the road.

The Wolves (3-4, 0-1 in district) actually got on the board first on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jordi Hernandez in the first quarter. Hernandez ran for 126 yards on 30 carries.

However, Seminole (6-1, 1-0) took the lead for good by turning a blocked punt into a touchdown for a 14-7 lead and led 28-14 at halftime. The Wolves cut it to 31-28 on a 2-yard run by Hernandez in the fourth quarter, but didn’t score again.

West Plains freshman quarterback Reid Macon threw for 251 yards and a touchdown.

In the other district game, Perryton broke a five-game losing streak by beating Levelland 28-10.

Class 5A

District 2-5A Division I

Tascosa scrapes past Monterey

Tascosa maintained sole possession of the district lead Friday night against winless Lubbock Monterey, but not as comfortably as the Rebels would have liked.

The Rebels jumped out to a first quarter lead and the defense made that hold up, which was good since their offense struggled in the last three quarters of a 21-10 victory on the road.

Typically, Tascosa (6-1, 3-0 in district) got out in front with two big plays to take a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Tayden Barnes scored on a 56-yard run on Tascosa’s first possession, then he blocked a Monterey field goal attempt and Micah Lewis scooped it up and went 60 yards for a score and a two-score lead.

Monterey (0-6, 0-2) cut it to 14-7 on Jaden Hibbler’s touchdown run in the second quarter. The Plainsmen moved the ball effectively in the second half, but not enough to get into the end zone.

Tascosa stopped a Monterey drive into the red zone in the third quarter, forcing the Plainsmen to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Giovanni Cardenas to cut it to 14-10. The Plainsmen threatened to take the lead when they drove inside the Tascosa 10-yard line early in the fourth quarter, but the Rebels stopped them on downs.

Treshun Wilson scored on a 5-yard run with under a minute left in the game to finally put it away for the Rebels. That capped a frustrating night offensively for Tascosa, which had only 245 yards and amassed a whopping 126 yards in penalties.

Wilson ran for a game-high 136 yards on 21 carries and had a touchdown called back because of a penalty. Hibbler ran for 125 yards on 15 carries.

Caprock crushed at Abilene

Caprock had another rough night in a district game, as the Longhorns never lit up the scoreboard in a 45-0 loss at Abilene High.

The Longhorns (4-3, 1-2) continued to struggle offensively, and hasn’t scored in six consecutive quarters. Caprock had only 144 yards of offense.

As usual, the Longhorns played respectably on defense, giving up 307 yards to Abilene (3-4, 2-1). Dylan Slack threw three touchdown passes for the Eagles, two of them to Tim Outlaw. Chad Lara caught a touchdown pass and ran for another for Abilene.

District 3-5A Division II

Palo Duro smashes Lubbock High

After a predistrict schedule which included some trying times, the Palo Duro Dons had everything go right in their District 2-5A Division II opener at Dick Bivins Stadium on Thursday.

It was hard to quibble with anything for Palo Duro, which was in control of the game from start to finish, as the Dons obliterated Lubbock 70-0 to get off on the right foot for district. Palo Duro is now 2-4 and 1-0 in district.

PD dominated in every phase of the game imaginable, scoring on offense, defense and special teams just in the first half. Kameron Brown was a factor in all three phases of the game for the Dons.

Brown did his usual thing at linebacker, as he terrorized Lubbock quarterback Ivan McGwier with three sacks in the first half. He also ran for two touchdowns, but his biggest play came early in the second quarter when it was still a competitive game.

The Dons scored on their first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead before Lubbock mounted a drive which eventually stalled deep in Palo Duro territory. But Brown stormed through and blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt by Yael Ontiveros, scooped it up himself and returned it 68 yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead.

The Dons struck with an even bigger dagger on the last play of the half. Lubbock had the ball in the waning seconds but instead of trying to run the clock out, halfback Zarius Martinez through an option pass which went straight up in the air.

Palo Duro freshman Darrian Lewis picked it off, and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown to make it 42-0 at the half.

Almost as if to cruelly remind Lubbock of how big a factor he’d been in the first half, Brown opened the second half by returning the kickoff 95 yards for a score and end whatever fleeting illusions Lubbock may have had about making things competitive.

The Westerners (2-4, 0-1) couldn’t mount anything resembling a running game. Lubbock had negative 33 yards rushing for the game.

PD was balanced offensively and didn’t punt once. Quarterback Avery Randle was perfect, completing all 12 of his passes for 163 yards and a touchdown.

The Dons had two 100-yard rushers. Tre’Sean Monroe ran for 105 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries, and Kumien Williams came off the bench to run for 115 yards and a 60-yard touchdown run to complete Palo Duro’s scoring in the fourth quarter.
