Dalhart gets massive win over Shallowater

After Friday night, the Dalhart Golden Wolves need to be looked at as legit contenders.

The Golden Wolves pulled off a massive win at home by downing last year’s district champion and favored Shallowater 21-14 behind a final drive that won’t be forgotten for years to come.

Dalhart took a 21-14 lead in the third quarter when quarterback Kyler Read hit Colton Carnesecca for a 74-yard score.

Shallowater took the ball late in the third and were driving to score. However, on the opening play of the fourth quarter, Carnesseca intercepted a Shallowater quarterback Clayton Vincent pass at the Dalhart five-yard line at the 11:52 mark.

From there, the Dalhart offense did the unthinkable in 2023. Reminiscent to a 1990’s offense, the Golden Wolves used their physicality to methodically run the ball behind a powerhouse QB in Read by getting yards in doses and chewing clock. That allowed the Golden Wolves to move the ball 90 yards on an eye-opening 23 plays, getting first downs and keeping the Shallowater offense off the field the entire fourth quarter as Dalhart went to victory formation at the Shallowater five-yard line for the incredible win.

Read was a star rushing the ball 32 times for 117 yards. He then threw for 224 yards with three touchdowns on 12-of-26 passing. Carnesseca not only came up with the key interception to open the final frame, but also had 108 yards receiving with two touchdowns on only four catches.

Defensively, Jeff Puga had a monster outing with 12 tackles, one for a loss with an interception. Dalhart intercepted four passes on the night.

The Golden Wolves keep pace with Bushland moving to 2-0 in District 2-3A Division I and 7-1 overall. The Mustangs fall to 3-4, 0-1.
