Class 2A roundup – West Texas High wins wild one over Highland Park, Wheeler downs Shamrock, Gruver rolls over Vega

West Texas High wins wild shootout to stun Highland Park 

In one of the more compelling games of the night fitting for Friday the 13th and with playoff positioning on the line, West Texas High erased a 21-point first half deficit to take leave Highland Park with a wild 58-54 shootout victory on Friday night at Hornets Stadium.

This win was clutch for the Comanches, who are now 2-0 in District 1-2A Division while moving to 4-3 overall. Highland Park is now in serious trouble of missing the playoffs dropping to 0-2 in district and 4-3 overall.

The Hornets were in total control leading 28-7 in the first half and 35-21 at halftime. The second half was a different story. As the two teams tussled back and forth totaling 1,606 yards of offense, it was the Comanche run game that ended up being the difference.

Head coach Jeff Smith went to his ground attack as WT High put up 331 yards rushing keyed by a Keaton Fellers 1-yard run with under two minutes to play that gave the Comanches a 58-54 eventual game-winning score.

Highland Park had one final chance but on the last play of the game from the WT High 35-yard line a Brady Thompson pass fell incomplete.

Kade Hamby and Fellers led the massive run game for WT High. Hamby finished with a game-high 142 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown. Fellers followed with 137 yards on 13 carries with three scores and also threw for 119 yards with another TD.

Despite the loss, Thompson threw for an eye-opening 529 yards of Highland Park’s 656 yards of offense with six touchdown passes but did have three interceptions. Teammate Elyes Torres had a career outing with 241 receiving yards with five touchdowns.

Farwell smokes Sanford-Fritch 

Farwell rebounded nicely from a loss to Stratford last week with a blowout win at Sanford-Fritch by a 47-6 count on Friday night.

This was a true one-sided affair with the Steers racking up 340 yards of offense to the Eagles 163.

Farwell opened up a 33-0 halftime lead highlighted by four touchdowns. Stancell ran for three TDs of 20, 10 and two yards, then returned an interception for another score. Stancell finished his night with 52 yards rushing on nine carries with three touchdowns, caught a 35-yard touchdown pass and tallied three tackles with a pick six.

Quarterback Jonathan Armstrong did his job going 7-of-12 for 218 yards with three TD tosses and rushed for a team-high 70 yards.

Farwell improves to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in District 1-2A Division I. Sanford-Fritch struggles continue at 0-7, 0-2.

Gruver puts it on Vega

Gruver put a major stamp on its first district win by blasting Vega 51-7 under the lights of Greyhounds Stadium on Friday night.

The Greyhounds are quietly putting a solid season together at 6-2 overall while moving to 1-0 in District 1-2A Division I. Vega falls 1-1 in the league and 2-5 overall.

The Greyhounds put 562 total yards thanks to 333 coming from their dominant ground attack. Gruver also had a variety of players produce in this victory.

Quarterback Briggs Satterfield keeps on trucking with great play going 10-of-13 by air for 229 yards with two touchdowns and ran for 83 yards. Pratt McLain chewed up 84 yards on 10 carries finding paydirt on two separate occasions, Colt Mathews added 53 yards on seven carries with a score and Michael McCloy had a 14-yard TD run and picked off a pass on defense.

Sunray gets past pesky Boys Ranch 

It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but the Sunray Bobcats were able to put away a valiant Boys Ranch team on Friday night leaving Roughriders Stadium with a 34-12 victory.

Give Boys Ranch credit, they hung with the No. 6-ranked Bobcats. The Roughriders held a high-powered Sunray offense scoreless in the first quarter and only trailed 14-0 at half.

The Bobcats eventually got it going totaling 506 yards on 52 plays. Quarterback Armando Lujan overcame two interceptions to go 23-of-36 for 337 yards with four touchdowns. He also added a rushing score. Running back Arnold Mendoza was clutch toting the rock 11 times for 133 yards and snagged three catches for 40 yards with a TD. Dawson Bennett hauled in five catches for 114 yards, Connor Petereit had a touchdown catch on 72 yards receiving and Damian Barragan had 30 yards receiving with a TD.

Defensively, Sunray limited Boys Ranch to 187 yards though sophomore Wetera Schlachter had a 75-yard kickoff return for the Roughriders.

District 2-2A Division II 

Wheeler upends Shamrock in county rivalry 

In the 77th installment of the War for Wheeler County, it was the Wheeler Mustangs stepping up and coming away with a huge 34-28 victory over rival Shamrock on Friday night at Nicholson Field.

The victory lifts the Mustangs to 1-1 in District 2-2A Division II and 2-5 overall. Shamrock is now in trouble for a playoff spot at 0-2 in district and 3-4 overall.

Wheeler took the lead for good in the third quarter. Trailing 22-18, running back Julius Atherton scored on a four-yard run and with a two-point conversion the Mustangs went up 26-22. From there, Wheeler padded the lead on some much-needed insurance with a 56-yard scamper from Creed Newkirk that put Wheeler up 34-22.

Shamrock made things exciting in the final moments of the fourth quarter Terry Menefield stripped Newkirk and went 18 yards for a touchdown cutting the lead 34-28 with 1:50 to play, however, Wheeler was able to get the ball back and run the clock out on the ensuing possession.

Newkirk had a great night in the win rushing for 134 yards on 14 carries with that TD. He was also 2-of-5 for 50 yards passing. Atherton complimented Newkirk grinding up the Shamrock defense for 115 yards on 25 totes with four touchdowns.

Wellington blanks Memphis

Wellington made quick work of struggling Memphis with a dominating 36-0 shutout on Friday night at Cyclones Stadium.

The Skyrocket defense was on fire holding the Cyclones to 18 total yards and 1-of-9 on third downs.

Quarterback Carson Tarver used his arm and his feet for a great effort. Tarver went 6-of-13 for 69 yards with two touchdowns and ran for 31 yards and another score. Running back Travion Lewis slashed threw the Memphis defense for a game-high 131 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown.

Shamrock’s Rodney Holmes was incredible snagging 12 catches for 170 yards. Quarterback Phillip Cook threw for 276 yards on 19-of-26 passing with three scores.

Wellington (5-2) is off to a 2-0 start in District 2-2A Division II. Memphis is still looking for its first win dropping to 0-6, 0-2.

Clarendon shuts out Quanah 

Clarendon stayed hot by winning its fourth straight game in a 40-0 rout of Quanah on Friday night.

The Broncos (4-3) are 2-0 in District 2-2A Division II while Quanah falls to 1-6, 1-1.

Lyric Smith continues to carry the Broncos offense with his dual-threat ability. The speedy Smith used his versatility to make a complete mismatch for the Indians. Smith was 10-of-18 for 200 yards passing with a TD and was dominant on the ground rushing for 133 yards with four more touchdowns on only 14 carries.

On the defensive side, Colton Caudle made 11 tackles for Clarendon.

District 3-2A Division II 

Bovina edges Crosbyton

The Bovina Mustangs held off Crosbyton to earn a hard-fought District 3-2A Division II win 29-26 on Friday night at Mustangs Stadium.

In a thrilling finish, Bovina kicker Miguel Lopez knocked through a game-winning 20-yard field goal with four seconds left in the game that lifted the Mustangs to a 29-26 victory.

Bovina gets a much-needed win pushing to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in district. Crosbyton remains winless on the year at 0-7, 0-2.

Daniel Herrera played efficiently at quarterback for the Mustangs going 13-of-27 for 224 yards with two touchdown passes. He also rushed for 73 yards on 21 carries including a 10-yard fourth quarter touchdown and Lopez not only kicked the game-winner but also hauled in six catches for 105 yards with two TD snags.
