West Texas High survives Spearman in thriller
West Texas High intercepted a pass in the endzone on a two-point conversion try with two minutes remaining that lifted the Comanches to a thrilling 28-27 victory against Spearman in a key District 1-2A Division I game at Comanches Stadium on Friday night.
Spearman quarterback Hudson Swan delivered a 27-yard strike to receiver Landon Sonnenburg cutting a WT High lead 28-27 with 1:57 to play in the game.
Despite a penalty pushing the ball to the six-yard line, the Lynx decided to go for the two-point conversion and the win.
Swan took the snap, faced pressure, so rolled to his left but Swan’s throw to the endzone was intercepted by WT High defender Rylee Buck securing the win for the Comanches.
“We talk about being resilient,” WT High head coach Jeff Smith said. “We knew it was going to be a tough game and a fight. This was an awesome win for us.”
With playoff positioning impactful in this battle, WT High improves to 7-2 overall but more importantly 3-1 in District 1-2A Division I and have secured at least the third-place spot.
Spearman (3-6) is now 2-2 in district and is more than likely finishing in the fourth and final postseason spot.
This showdown was definitely a tale of two halves. WT High came out on fire scoring on its opening three possessions to Spearman’s six offensive snaps to take a 20-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
Quarterback Cayde Winters and the offense was hitting on cylinders with Winters scoring all three first half TDs on runs of 14, 10 and eight yards. Spearman was able to punch a touchdown in before the half going into the break down 20-7.
The Lynx carried that momentum into the third quarter scoring on another Sonnenburg from Swan pitch and catch cutting that deficit to 20-14.
To open the fourth, Spearman took its first and only lead on a JP Carbajal six-yard score putting the Lynx up 21-20.
That lead didn’t last long for the Lynx.
After hitting a lull in the final two quarters, the WT offense came to life as Kelby Sherwood broke loose on a 21-yard score as the Comanches went up 26-21.
Following a holding call, WT High went for a two-point conversion from the 12-yard line. That’s when Winters hit Sherwood on a screen with Sherwood sprinting in for the clutch two points and a 28-21 advantage.
Spearman didn’t go away driving right back down the field to score, but the WT defense stepped up with the only turnover of the game at the perfect time.
“I’m proud of this team,” Smith said. “These guys were 0-10 as freshman and they all rally around Cayde (Winters), and he gets them going. This is a great win for our program.”
Winters had another masterful performance carrying the ball 32 times for 187 yards with three touchdowns. Winters was also 5-of-8 for 60 yards passing. Sherwood chipped in 79 yards on the ground on 14 carries with a TD.
