Cooper Schilling, Perryton football, So.
On the field: The Perryton Rangers couldn’t have scripted a better first career win for head coach Joshua Hernandez in a thrilling win against Canyon to open the season last Friday.
Schilling was the catalyst to the victory highlighted by a late two-point conversion sneak with 22 seconds left. On top of that play, Schilling had a sensational start to his sophomore year dicing up the Eagles going 12-of-20 threw the air for 198 yards with three touchdowns and shocked fans with his running ability tallying 184 yards on the ground with another score on 15 carries.
Coach Joshua Hernandez: “It was an amazing night, and it was something this community needed. I’m so proud of this team and Cooper for the effort they gave in this game. We knew we were going for two if we had the chance, and Cooper got behind his line on the sneak and mashed it in. When we scrimmaged Plainview, we didn’t do a good job of responding when they hit us, but we stepped up and responded to Canyon. Cooper was a part of that. I heard when I got here, he was going to be special but then I started watching him and I could really see it. He does so much on the field and a lot of the field. He leads the offense, and he’s very mature. He’s a great leader and works hard everywhere we need him to.”
Schilling: “That win was huge for us. We know we have a lot to work on but that is the kind of win that can help us with are confidence. The community needed that and there were a lot of eyes on us to see how we would respond. I want to make sure and give credit to the offensive line. They are the ones that won us that football game. They played outstanding the entire game. For myself, coming into my sophomore year, I feel the game is really slowing down. I have a lot of growing to still do but I’m learning and getting more confidence by the day.”
