Ascension Academy qualifies seven to the TAPPS Class 2A state track and field meet; San Jacinto Christian has strong showing at regionals

It was a superb day for Ascension Academy during the TAPPS Class 2A North Regional track and field meet on the campus of UT Arlington on Thursday afternoon.

The Cardinals were able to qualify a total of seven athletes to the TAPPS Class 2A state meet thanks to outstanding performances.

Owen Chow, and Kathleen Bartley highlighted the regional for Ascension.

Chow showed off his speed like he has all season in the boys events by running a quality time of 50.82 to grab a gold medal in the 400-meter race. Chow found the medal stand once more as a silver medalist in the 200-meter dash registering a time of 22.87. Chow wasn’t done. Chow along with teammates Gabriel Miller, BJ Britton and Zachary Parker ran a time of 3:36.68 for a bronze medal in the mile relay event.

Parker also punched a ticket to state by getting fourth in the 800-meter run (2:04.86). Ascension’s Wyatt Cox will advance to the state meet in the discus with a silver medal throw of 122-feet.

On the girls’ side, Bartley carried the momentum from her great year into the regional meet. Despite rainy conditions Thursday morning, Bartley was able to clear 8-feet-6 inches to win the gold medal in the pole vault, and then earned a bronze in the high jump (4-6). Teammate Sora Gamel will join Bartley at state thanks to a bronze medal in the shot put (29-11 1/4).

San Jacinto will send Siscely Mincher and the boys sprint relay to the state championships. Mincher punched a ticket in two events at regional. Mincher ran a strong 100-meter hurdle race to gain a silver by clocking a time of 17.19. Mincher also earned a spot in Waco with a fourth place spot in the triple jump (32-1 1/2).

The Patriots sprint relay team of Matthew Richard, Brennan Thorton, Samuel Silva and Jacob Moore, raced to a time of 46.07 getting a silver medal to advance.

The TAPPS Class 2A state track and field meet is set for May 8-9 at Panther Stadium on the campus of Waco Midway High School.
