Tascosa stuns Lubbock Monterey in final seconds 

A Nic’Kiyah Fisher jumper in the paint with just a few ticks on the clock remaining propelled the Tascosa Lady Rebels past Lubbock Monterey as the Lady Rebels pulled off a 61-60 thrilling victory in front of an electric crowd at the THS Activity Center during a District 3-5A clash Friday night.

It may only be December but there were a ton of eyes focused on this battle thanks to the highly touted No. 1-recruit in the country Aaliyah Chavez in town.

For fans in attendance, this contest didn’t disappoint in any way possible.

Tascosa and Monterey went back-and-forth in single digits throughout. After the first quarter the game was tied, 15-15, with the Lady Plainsman holding a slight edge 36-31 at halftime.

Through three quarters, Monterey led 48-47, then came the fourth quarter. Particularly the final 12 seconds.

Trailing 60-59 with 12 seconds to play Tascosa’s Fisher took an inbounds pass on the perimeter. Fisher then drove to the basket penetrating into the lane, floated up a jumper over two defenders for the eventual game-winning bucket with 4.7 seconds remaining to give the Lady Rebels the dramatic victory.

Those two huge points were part of 16 for Fisher on the night. Teammate Tryssa Dowd added 15.

Tascosa did an excellent job defending the very dangerous Chavez holding the prolific scorer to 14 points on the evening.

Tascosa (16-2 overall) remains perfect in District 3-5A at 4-0. Monterey (18-3) suffers its first district loss falling to 4-1.

Panhandle opens 2-2A play with win at Clarendon

In a battle of two teams with high expectations, Panhandle was able to get the best of Clarendon in the first of two matchups as well as the district opener thanks to a big 50-42 road win Friday night.

The Ettes are off to an incredible start to the year at a perfect 17-0 overall and are now 1-0 in District 2-2A. The Lady Broncos fall to 13-4 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Panhandle trailed 16-11 after one but clawed back in the second quarter outscoring the Lady Broncos 12-6 to take a 23-22 advantage into half.

The third quarter was the difference in the contest with Panhandle taking the momentum going on a 13-6 run over those eight minutes.

Riley Segura played a key role in the victory with a game-high 16 points. Teammate Paige Bixby chipped in 13. Despite the loss, Kashlyn Conkin and Kate Shaw each had 11 for Clarendon.

Stratford holds off Spearman

A strong first half was enough for the Stratford Lady Elks to get past Spearman 42-37 during a District 1-2A showdown Friday night at the Lynx Gym.

Stratford was able to take command in the first half building a 25-12 lead. The Lynxettes battled back in the fourth quarter, however, the comeback fell short.

The Lady Elks used a big outing from Madi Braden who scored a team-high 13 points.

Stratford is off to a 14-1 start on the year while moving to 2-0 in District 1-2A. Spearman (10-4) drops to 1-1 in district.

Friday’s top performers 

• McLean’s Kasidy Russell dropped in an incredible 44 points during the Lady Tigers 80-33 victory against Lefors.
• Bella Edwards continues her strong season pouring in 31 points to propel the Amarillo High Lady Sandies past Lubbock High 57-22.
• Happy’s Abby McCreary went for a game-high 26 points that was more than enough to earn the Cowgirls a lopsided 65-29 win against Springlake-Earth.
• Brooklyn Birkenfeld of Nazareth had a superb outing with 22 points during a Swiftettes 88-21 thumping of Lazbuddie.
• Savannah Perez and Maricela Soto combined for 31 points that helped Hartley beat Boys Ranch 48-45. Perez scored 16 points on the night followed by Soto’s 15.
• Kennah Thomas and Sadie Sanchez combined for 40 points as the Lady Raiders beat up Borger 73-49. Thomas scored a game-high 22 followed by Sanchez with 18.
• Dumas picked up its first District 4-4A win downing Perryton 47-41 at home. Hannah Hernandez led the way with 18 points.
• Freshman Khloe Griffitt tallied 16 points in Vega’s 51-33 win at Sunray.
• Memphis edged Wheeler 44-43 in a District 2-2A opener Friday. Choie O’Neil was a big reason for the win registering a game-high 15 points for the Lady Cyclones.
