The second round of the Texas High School volleyball playoffs have come to a close after 16 teams from the Texas Panhandle and South Plains competed on Monday and Tuesday.. Here’s a recap of how teams faired inlcuding Tascosa’s win over El Paso High, Bushland’s sweep of Denver City and Fort Elliott’s victory against Fort Davis.
Class 5A
The Tascosa Lady Rebels kept on rolling through the Class 5A Division I playoffs knocking off El Paso High in straight sets 25-15-25-15, 25-20 to claim the regional quarterfinal championship Monday at Monahans High School.
During this dominating effort, Libby Miller quarterbacked the offense by setting up her hitters with a team-high 20 assists. That benefitted Avery Scalf, who knocked down eight kill and Bennet Berryman carried the back row with 14 digs.

Tascosa (29-11) is headed to the regional semifinals for a matchup with Birdville (27-9) at 7 p.m. Thursday in Childress.
It was another night of quick work for Amarillo High, as the Lady Sandies won their 18th straight match downing El Paso Chapin 25-19, 25-14, 25-21, Tuesday night in a regional quarterfinal at Seminole High School.
The Lady Sandies push their overall mark to 32-8 on the season and will get Aledo (39-3) in the regional semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday at Vernon High School.
Senior Kinsler Hanson showed her veteran leadership against Chapin on Tuesday, attacking the net for eight kills and putting together a very solid serving night with four aces. Do-it-all sophomore Harper Vaughn was all over the court leading AHS with 13 kills and dishing out 15 assists for a double-double, and had nine digs.
Teammate Kensleigh Payne was a major factor at the net, stopping anything close to her with eight blocks.
In Division II, Lubbock-Cooper had a much smoother second round than its five-set first round matchup against Wichita Falls Memorial.
The Lady Pirates didn’t have to take El Burges to the wire getting a three-set sweep, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20, to win the regional quarterfinal gold ball at Odessa Permian High School.
Lubbock-Cooper (25-12) advances to the regional semifinal where they will now square off against Grapevine (26-19) at 5 p.m. Thursday on the campus of Wichita Falls Memorial.
Standout Broox Lopez dished out an impressive 41 assists to go with five kills and four digs. Haley McCallick blistered Burges pounding home 14 kills and added eight digs while Bry Carlile added 10 kills.
Class 4A
It was a total lopsided effort during a second round match for Canyon as the Lady Eagles completely dismantled El Paso Riverside in the Class 4A Division II regional quarterfinals, 25-16, 25-4, 25-17, on Tuesday at Andrews High School.
Helping lead the blowout win was standout Laney Jones. The outside hitter commanded the court, slamming down a game-high 17 kills and served up three aces. Brylee McElroy and London Gibson did an outstanding job of moving the ball around combining for 30 assists. McElroy finished with a team-high 17 and Gibson totaled 13. Teammate Aiva Kerr paced the defense with eight digs.
Canyon (23-15) is now set for a showdown against Eagle Mountain (34-11) at 5 p.m. Thursday in Colorado City. Eagle Mountain picked up a sweep of District 5-4A champion, Lubbock-Cooper Liberty on Monday, 25-17, 25-21, 25-14. The Lady Patriots ended a tremendous year at 41-3 following the defeat.
In Division I, Frenship Memorial saw a fantastic first year as a program come to a hault, falling to Springtown, 25-17, 25-22, 25-22. The Lady Panthers finish with a record of 27-9.
Class 3A
Behind a huge night from Emma Clawson, the Shallowater Fillies were able to advance past Presidio in the regional quarterfinals with a four-set, 25-16, 23-25, 25-16, 25-5, win on Monday at Wink High School.
Clawson was unstoppable against the Presidio defense knocking down 30 kills on 48 attacks for a hitting percentage of .583 on the night. On top of her maginificient offense, Clawson showed her versatility nabbing eight digs.
Jorja Mcguire also celebrated a very special night. for Shallowater. McGuire finished the game with a team-best 26 digs putting Mcguire over 1,000 digs for her career. Mcguire even handed out 14 assists for a double-double against Presidio.
The Fillies (35-9) move on to face the Peaster (37-12-1) 7 p.m. Friday at Munday High School.
Bushland did what it was expected to do and that was get a sweep of Denver City in the Class 3A Division I regional quarterfinal round.
The Lady Falcons didn’t have any issues, rolling past Denver City with a three-set sweep, 25-19, 25-17, 25-12, on Tuesday in Littlefield.
Bushland (37-8), the two-time defending state champions, have now won 15 straight playoff matches and will look to make it 16 straight when they go against Jim Ned (29-10) in the regional semifinals at 2 p.m. on the campus of Lubbock-Cooper.
Berklee Billington destroyed the Denver City defense with a big night on the front row pounding down 13 kills and tacked on four aces. Laynee Adams followed with 11 kills and Jaida Scott along with Morgan Eberly dished out a combined 40 assists. Scott tallied a team-high 22 with Eberly giving out 18. Ava Permenter was the defensive factor nabbing 22 digs.
Division II
Idalou is marching on in the postseason thanks to a 27-25, 25-23, 25-18, victory against Alpine in the Class 3A Division II regional quarterfinals Monday at Odessa Permian High School.
Alpine (24-17) pushed the Lady Wildcats in the first set, but Idalou was able to take control of the match in the final two sets to complete the sweep.
Sophomore Hadley Underwood played a key role in the win using her skills to go for 10 kills and served up four aces. Kambrie Royce had seven kills with a pair of blocks on the front row,, Campbell Ross tacked on five aces and Briley Stephens along side Brianna Fishback each registered four kills.
Idalou (25-15) will battle Wall (34-7) in the regional semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday in Snyder.
In another Division II game Tuesday, Odessa Compass was able to defeat Friona 25-23, 21-25, 25-10, 25-23. The Squaws did have a strong showing from Aubree Bunker despite the loss as Bunker landed 22 kills. The Squaws end a very good year at 22-9.
Class 1A
Coming off a first round bye, the Fort Elliott Lady Cougars didn’t show any rust, getting a three-set sweep of Fort Davis, 25-11, 25-13, 25-13, during a UIL Class 1A area round matchup Tuesday in Brownfield.
The Lady Cougars came out blazing with momentum behind Jaycee Sewell. The Wayland Baptist commit quarterbacked the offense with 23 assists, adding four kills, four digs and two aces. Teammate Ali Mahler was a workhorse with eight digs and six kills as Jaylie Dickey went for five kills, four aces and four digs.
Fort Elliott (29-6), the District 1-1A champions, advance to the regional quarterfinals to meet up with Buena Vista (23-11) at a time and place to be determined.
District rival Miami followed Fort Elliott in Brownfield and also kept on rolling in the postseason, by beating Marfa in the area round in four-sets, 25-19, 25-10, 23-25, 25-12, on Tuesday.
The Lady Warriors improve to 22-7 overall and move on to take on Klondike (26-12) in the regional quarterfinals at a time and place to be determined.
Team leader Bentley Brooks put together her second consecutive triple-double thanks to another incredible showing. Brooks was dazzling against Marfa hitting the floor for 26 digs, passing out 21 assists and attacked the net for 10 kills. On top of those numbers, Brooks also had three aces.
Freshman Brylie Thompson continues to show her versatility, following with 16 assists and 13 kills for a double-double and Ava Lackey tacked on a double-double of her own with 24 digs and 11 kills.
Playoff quick hits
Sanford-Fritch’s season came to an end at the hands of Wink during a Class 2A Division I regional quarterfinal match Tuesday at Lubbock-Cooper High School. The Lady Wildcats were able to put the Lady Eagles away, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-19. Fritch, the District 1-2A champions, finish with an overall record of 22-9. Emma Williams did have 15 kills for the Lady Eagles.
In the TAPPS Class 2A Area round, Ovilla Christian defended home court against San Jacinto Christian Academy with a 25-11, 25-17, 25-18, sweep of the Lady Patriots on Tuesday. The Lady Patriots season ends with a 33-7 record. Despite the loss, Alayna Daniel did have 14 digs and seven kills. Blayne Robison added 13 assists.
