Gruver sweeps team titles at home track meet

While the Amarillo Relays Meet of Champions are taking center stage over the weekend, the Texas Panhandle saw plent of meets from across the Amarillo-area take place on Thursday and Friday.

The Gruver track teams were quite impressive Thursday during the Hounds Relays with both the Hounds and Lady Hounds claiming team titles. The Gruver boys team stacked up 195 points to defend the home track while the Lady Hounds racked up 168 points for a team championship.

Tyerin Aranda highlighted the girls’ side of action for Gruver earning four gold medals. The senior swept the hurdle events clocking a 16.14 in the 100-hurdle race and then won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.90. Aranda was also part of the Lady Hounds 800-meter relay winning team that posted a 1:50.37 and won the long jump championship leaping 17-0 1/2.

On the boys’ side, Gruver had a pair of individuals do big things Thursday. Senior Walker Maupin and freshman Mason Lankford combined for seven gold medals. Maupin won the 200-meter race clocking a 22.94, was a part of a winning mile relay squad that ran 3:37.93 and hit a 41-1 to win the triple jump. Lankford won the 110-meter hurdles thanks to a 15.36, then took gold as a part of the mile relay and won two field events in the long jump (20-8 1/4) and the high jump (5-10).

Sunray freshman Dominik Dominguez showed his speed in Gruver by blazing a 10.97 to get the 100-meter dash championship. Dominguez was also part of Sunray’s sprint relay team that won with a 44.15.

White Deer wins team titles Friday

It was a strong day for the White Deer track and field teams Friday as both the Bucks and Does won team championships during the White Deer Invitational.

The Bucks had a banner day stacking up 217 points with the Does winning with 153 points.

Caynden Mynear led the boys team winning four gold medals. Mynear first won the high jump title (5-6), during the running portion he claimed a gold in the 800-meter race with a 2:07.59 and the 1600-meter race thanks to a 5:06.9. He also shared in the 800-meter relay win with Mynear and his team running a time of 1:38.24.

Faith Jackson was the showcase for White Deer during the girls’ portion of the meet. Jackson won a eye-popping five gold medals starting with two jumping events. Jackson won the high jump (4-4) and the long jump (14-8 1/2) and then took her talent to the track where she clocked a 12.56 for the 100-meter dash title. Jackson went on to win the 200-meter race (27.72) and was a part of the 800-meter relay team that won with a 1:55.78.

McLean’s Kasidy Russell had a big afternoon of her own. Russell made it a sweep in the hurdle events by taking gold in the 100-meter hurdles (17.78) then the 300-meter hurdles (50.90) and was part of the winning mile relay squad (4:38.37).

Thursday and Friday quick hits

Canadian Wildcat Relays

The Dalhart boys and Canadian girls won team championships during the Wildcat Relays in Canadian on Thursday. Dalhart tallied 184 points for the boys’ title while the Lady Cats posted 185 points for the girls’ championship.

Dalhart’s Hunter Trusler won the long jump event leaping 21-4 1/2. Trusler was also part of two winning relays helping his team to the 400-meter relay (42.60) title and the 800-meter relay victory with a 1:31.62.

Canadian standout Konnar McClendon continued her great career and year. McClendon, a senior, won the 3200-meter title with a strong time of 11:29.25 and then the 1600-meter championship pacing the field with a 5:25.35. Dalhart’s

Kaetlin Sundvahl won four gold medals. Sundvahl won the long jump (17-7) and the triple jump (34-1). She then was then part of a gold medal sprint relay team (49.41) and won the 100-meter hurdles thanks to a 15.99.

Dimmitt Bobcat Relays

The Friona Squaws won the Dimmitt Relays with 148 points with the Tulia boys team getting 129 points to edge Pampa for the team title.

Hereford sophomore Brix Manchen set a new school-record popping off a leap of 6-7 to win the high jump. Muleshoe’s Yahir Quezada of Muleshoe had an impressive showing in Dimmitt clocking a 10.74 to win the 100-meter dash and then ran a 23.76 for the 200-meter title. Tulia swept all three relays that earned the Hornets 60 points.

Friona’s Kitzy Welch took home three gold medals starting with the discus event where she tossed a 130-9 for the gold medal. Welch then made it a sweep in the hurdles starting in the 100-meter with a time of 16.16. Welch took her third gold in the 300-meter hurdles sprinting to a 52.02.

Dimmitt’s Lily Rodriguez also had a big day getting gold in the 100-meter dash (12.98) and the 200-meter race (27.32).

Post Antelopes Relays

The Farwell girls competed well once again finishing second at the Post Antelopes Relays scoring a total of 128 points.

Bella Jaime is getting better by the week after bringing home more hardware to the trophy case. Jaime won the 200-meter sprint with a time of 26.73 and the 400-meter race clocking a 58.49. Teammate Alexis Wade dominated the long-distance events running a time of 12:07.34 for the 3200-meter title and then paced the field with a 5:28.93 to claim gold in the 1600-meter run.
