Canadian opens district blowing out Friona
Canadian played with a new energy coming off a bye week by snapping a two-game losing skid scoring early and often on the way to a 63-14 blistering of Friona on Chris Koetting Field at Wildcats Stadium on Friday night.
The Wildcats, who have won 55 of their last 57 district games, move to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in District 1-3A Division II. Friona’s struggles continue falling to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in district action.
The Wildcats offense found their rhythm on the opening play of the game when running back Slayden Dickinson broke loose and sprinted 68-yards for a touchdown putting Canadian up quickly 7-0.
Canadian never looked back, scoring on all seven first half possessions to claim a commanding 49-0 halftime advantage.
The Wildcats finished the game racking up an eye-opening 618 yards of offense with 451 of those yards coming by half.
Freshman quarterback Weston Mitchell continues to settle in with another superb performance going 19-of-26 for 310 yards with five touchdown passes to five different receivers.
Dickinson ended his short night with 135 yards on seven carries, all in the first half and Julian Dominguez caught three passes for 65 yards with a touchdown.
The Canadian defense did its job holding Friona to 31 first half yards and 181 for the contest.
Canadian senior linebacker Wyatt Davis made an incredible appearance after spending three days in the hospital earlier in the week being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Davis alternated defensive series in the Wildcats win over the Chieftains.
Davis was excellent making 11 tackles, two of those for a loss and a sack.
Childress cruises to another district win
The Childress Bobcats have put together back-to-back district wins after going on the road and handling Tulia 41-7 on Friday night at Younger Field in Tulia.
The Bobcats defense stifled the Tulia offense holding the Hornets to 45 total yards and only 10 rushing yards. Childress forced three turnovers and kept the offense off the field as Tulia was 0-for-10 on third down conversions.
Jacob Mora led the charge with 13 tackles with teammate Colton Teichelman racking up six tackles, two of those coming for a loss and a sack.
On the offensive side, Childress built a 20-0 halftime lead highlighted by a pair of Cash Hightower touchdown snags. Hightower ended the game with seven catches for 83 yards and those two TDs.
The Bobcats found success running the ball behind the 1-2 punch of Lucian Davis and Kobe Sims. Davis carried the ball 10 times for 92 yards with Sims following for 69 yards on six carries. Quarterback Jonah Reed completed 7-of-13 passes for 125 yards and three touchdowns.
Childress improves to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in District 1-3A Division II. Tulia (3-5 overall) is now 1-1 in district.
District 2-3A Division II
Muleshoe holds off Littlefield
There isn’t a team used to playing wild games like the Muleshoe Mules in 2024.
The Mules found themselves in yet another shootout battling Littlefield in the “War for Highway 84”, however, Muleshoe was able to hold off a late rally from the Wildcats to get a big 55-51 victory on David Wood Field at Benny Douglas Stadium in Muleshoe on Friday night.
The Mules (6-2 overall) are off to a 2-0 start to District 2-3A Division II. Littlefield (5-3) drops to 1-1 in the league.
Muleshoe’s offense came out firing posting 35 first half points taking a 35-25 advantage into halftime. In the third quarter, the offense stayed hot going up 55-38 heading into the fourth.
Though the Mules’ offense slowed up a bit in the fourth quarter being held scoreless, the defense got a stop when they needed to late to hold off a Littlefield rally for the 55-51 win.
Quarterback Nathan Martens continues to impress each and every week. The senior gunslinger made life difficult for the Wildcats going 17-of-26 through the air for 363 yards with three touchdowns. Martens then used his speed to chew up 142 yards on 15 carries with two more scores.
Mauricio Herrera once more benefitted at wide out, snagging 12 catches from Martens for 214 yards with a pair of TDs.
In the other 2-3A Division II game on Friday, Idalou rolled over Lubbock Roosevelt 40-6.
Non-district
River Road gets second straight thrilling win
For a second straight week, River Road had its fans on the edge of the their seats and by the end had them taking a deep breath thanks to a thrilling victory.
The Wildcats were able to punch in a late touchdown that was enough to down Guymon, Okla., 29-28, to close out the non-district schedule on Friday night at Wildcats Stadium.
The Wildcats have put together back-to-back wins in dramatic fashion against Lamesa last week and the Tigers on Friday. River Road now heads to District 1-3A Division I play sitting at 4-3 overall.
Guymon (3-5) jumped out to 16-0 advantage Friday. The Wildcats answered scoring 22 unanswered points behind running back Malaki Miller and quarterback Alex Warren.
The Tigers made a rally of their own to go up 28-22, but with a 1:26 remaining, River Road capped off a 67-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run from Warren tying the game, 28-28. Diego Martinez, who had missed an extra-point earlier in the night, drilled the eventual game-winner that lifted the Wildcats to the huge victory.
Warren had his second straight big outing rushing it 17 times for 81 yards with a touchdown and threw for another score. Warren also had an interception on defense. Miller tacked on a team-high 110 yards on the ground on 14 carries with a TD.
