Canyon shuts down Caprock

The Canyon Eagles seem more and more determined with each passing week to put what happened in their first week far behind them.

Thursday night at Dick Bivins Stadium, the Eagles took on Caprock after rallying to beat Palo Duro in the fourth quarter a week earlier. There were no such dramatics this time, as Canyon took an early lead and didn’t let up in coasting to a 27-3 victory.

It was Canyon’s third straight victory, as the Eagles (3-1) have made defense a priority after losing a season-opening shootout at Perryton, 45-44.

The Eagles allowed Caprock (1-3) only 137 total yards and pulled off the rare feat of scoring two safeties in a game. Caprock’s only score came on a second quarter field goal as Canyon led the Longhorns 14-3 at halftime.

Canyon pounded the ball well on the ground, running for 220 yards, as Ryan Rivera had 95 yards on only 10 carries. Defensively, linebacker Colt Cruth led the Eagles with eight tackles and an interception.

Tascosa loses shootout at Permian

It was the most productive night of the season for the Tascosa Rebels as far as the scoreboard was concerned, but it didn’t result in a happy trip back home.

Tascosa racked up big numbers offensively, uncharacteristically doing it through the air as opposed to the ground, but still came up short as a two-point conversion was stopped and the Rebels fell at Odessa Permian 50-48 on Friday.

The difference in the game was that Permian made a pair of two-point conversions following touchdowns in the third quarter to erase a 14-point deficit. Tascosa (1-3) trailed 50-42 in the fourth quarter when Charlie McKinney scored on a nine-yard run to cut it to 50-48 with 3:59 left in the game. However, McKinney was stopped on the two-point conversion and Permian (4-0) held on for the win.

T.J. Tillman had a huge game for Tascosa with four catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns, and he returned the second half kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to give the Rebels a 42-28 lead before the Panthers scored 22 unanswered points. Tascosa’s Coltyn Fulton threw for 159 yards and three touchdowns.

Class 4A

Hereford blows past Perryton

Like Randall, Hereford stayed unbeaten with another balanced offensive performance, as the Whitefaces took control of the game with a big second quarter to coast to a 41-13 victory over Perryton.

Hererford (4-0) is one of only seven undefeated teams remaining in the Texas Panhandle.

Hereford jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter on the second of two touchdown runs in the first half by Brylyn Lopez. Kalub Ramirez threw his second touchdown pass of the game on a 9-yard score to Tyi Duque to make it 28-7 at halftime.

Lopez ran for 140 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries and Ramirez completed 16-of-20 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Tell Bryant had eight catches for 141 yards and a touchdown for the Herd.

Ethan Gonzales made an incredible one-handed snag in this game and finished with 25 yards receiving.

Randall blows out Legacy

The results were predictable when Randall hosted Wichita Falls Legacy at Happy State Bank Stadium.

Unbeaten Randall (4-0) continued to show commendable offensive balance against winless new school Wichita Falls Legacy, as quarterback Kaison Benton was nearly perfect as the Raiders routed Legacy 56-16.

Benton couldn’t miss, as he completed 16-of-18 passes for 230 yards and four touchdowns to four receivers. Dylan Ray continued to run the ball well for Randall (4-0), as he ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.

The 56 points were a season high for Randall, and the third straight game in which the Raiders have surpassed 40 points.

Pampa edges Borger in 89th meeting of intense rivalry 

In one of the Panhandle’s most storied rivalry games, it was no surprise that it came down near the end as host Pampa held on to beat Borger 16-13 to give the Harvesters their first win at newly named Zach Thomas Stadium.

During a scoreless fourth quarter, Pampa (2-2) was holding on to the lead as Borger (1-3) was driving when Christian Davalos made an open field tackle and stripped the football and recovered it to seal the win. Davalos led the Harvesters with 14 tackles.

Pampa’s Jarren Hill threw two touchdown passes but defense was the story of the night, as the Harvesters held the Bulldogs to 150 yards of offense.

Dumas falls short against Plainview

Dumas took an early lead but couldn’t hold on, as a late long scoring pass by Plainview handed the Demons a 35-28 loss on the road which made both teams .500 for the season.

The Demons (2-2) took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter as Colton Mills ran five yards for a touchdown and threw 40-yards to Blake Robinson for another.

Plainview (2-2), though, tied it 14-14 in the second quarter on two touchdown runs by quarterback Seth Mayberry.

In the third quarter, Mayberry ran for two more scores to give the Bulldogs the lead, then after Dumas tied it 28-28, Mayberry threw a 75-yard scoring pass to Abram Garcia for the eventual winning points. That ruined solid efforts by Mills (265 yards passing) and Conor Fry (172 yards rushing, two scores).
