Amarillo-area boys district basketball scores for January 23rd

West Plains edges Canyon 

West Plains sure made things interesting in District 4-4A while putting themselves in the district conversation thanks to a 52-47 victory over rival Canyon at home on Tuesday night.

It’s the first time in the Wolves’ short history to knock off the Eagles. West Plains (18-7) pulls into a second-place tie with Canyon (14-9) at 5-2 in the district standings just two games back of first place Randall (23-3, 7-0).

West Plains was in control at halftime with a 28-20 advantage. Following three quarters, Canyon had cut the deficit 36-32, however, West Plains was able to hold off a fourth quarter rally from the Eagles.

Ayden Rodriguez led West Plains with 12 points as teammates Wiley Killham and Cade Bullard each scored 10. Canyon’s Gage Lunsford posted a game-high 20.

Gruver takes control of 1-2A lead

Gruver took over full control of the District 1-2A lead by taking care of West Texas High in Stinnett cruising to a 64-45 victory on Tuesday night.

The Greyhounds (14-9 overall) are now a perfect 4-0 in the district race while West Texas High (18-4) falls into second place at 3-1.

Gruver got off to a great start jumping all over the Comanches with an 18-5 lead to end the first. After taking a 32-23 advantage into halftime, Gruver extended that lead to 46-31 by the end of three.

Caden Armes ate up the Comanche defense with a game-high 20 points. Teammate Colt Mathews chipped in with 12.

Tuesday’s top performers

Jailyn Sledge guided the Tascosa Rebels to their first District 3-5A win scoring a game-high 21 points in a 66-35 blowout of Plainview.

Randall racked up the points in a 108-46 blasting of Dumas on Tuesday. KJ Thomas and teammate Tim Perez each went for 23 points.

Julian Cervantes scored 20 points as the Perryton Rangers routed Borger 74-45.

Diego Villegas poured in 20 that helped Hereford beat Pampa 55-39.

Spearman’s Hector Diaz had a game-high 16 points as the Lynx held off Bushland in a close 42-41 victory on Tuesday night.

Connor Miller of Canadian was a mismatch for River Road during a 57-26 win. Miller put up a game-high 23 that kept the Wildcats undefeated in District 1-3A.

Kagan Davis of Sunray dropped in 26 points that lifted the Bobcats to their first win of the season in a 56-44 victory at Booker.

Follett pulled into a first-place tie with Miami with a 48-41 home win on Tuesday. Maddox Miller scored 16 points to lead the Panthers.
