Childress handles Abernathy
Unlike the first meeting in the season opener that was a very close game, Childress was able to come out and take care of Abernathy with a commanding 28-6 Class 3A Division II bi-district victory on Friday night at Tyer Stadium in Floydada.
Childress jumped out to a 14-point first quarter lead off a pair of touchdown tosses from Drake Rabe to Isaiah Jalamo of 20 and 13 yards. After the Antelopes cut the deficit 14-6, senior Da’Reon Mathis swung the momentum back to the Bobcats breaking loose for a 72-yard touchdown run giving Childress a comfortable 21-6 halftime advantage. Mathis once again was magnificent rushing for 135 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns. Rabe was efficient in the pass game going 9-of-13 for 141 yards with two TDs and Jalamo finished with 70 yards receiving with his two scores.
Childress (8-3) gets a rematch with Wall (9-2) from last year’s area round at 7 p.m. on Friday in Post.
In another Class 3A Division II bi-district game on Friday, Lubbock Roosevelt ended Friona’s season 35-14. The Chieftains end their year at 5-6 overall.
Class 3A Division I
Muleshoe pulls away from Lamesa
Muleshoe got a little more than they expected from Lamesa in a rematch from a Week 2 blowout, but the Mules were able to come together in the second half to pull away for a 56-20 win during a Class 3A Division I bi-district game on Friday night in Littlefield.
Muleshoe won the first meeting 48-6 in early September; however, the Golden Tors (2-9) came out going toe-to-toe leading 12-0 early in the first, and trailing only 21-20 at halftime. Coming out in the second half, Muleshoe turned it up to another level outscoring Lamesa 35-0 in the final 24 minutes to roll to the victory.
The key to this one for Muleshoe was the 1-2 punch of running backs Daniel Sianez and Josue Sigala. Sianez, the senior, carried it 12 times for 137 yards with two touchdown runs of 26 yards, while the freshman Sigala showed his speed going for 115 yards on 10 carries with three scores of 24, 10, and three yards.
Quarterback Nathan Martens settled in to finish 8-of-12 for 115 yards with a pair of touchdowns, and on the defensive side Arnold Morales made 11 total tackles.
Muleshoe (9-2) is headed to the area round to take on powerhouse Brock (8-3) at 6 p.m. Thursday in San Angelo.
Class 2A Division II
Gruver marches on past Shamrock
The Gruver Greyhounds picked up where they left off to end the regular season getting another convincing win. This time it was a rout of Shamrock 49-14 in a Class 2A Division II bi-district meeting on a cold night in Borger on Friday.
The Greyhounds (9-2) advance to the area round to get a matchup with Ralls (8-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Happy State Bank Stadium in Canyon.
Sophomore quarterback Briggs Satterfield like usual showed his dual-threat using his legs for 89 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns and threw for 137 yards on 17-of-24 passing with a score. Pratt McLain and Walker Maupin did the damage out of the backfield. McLain had a game-high 141 yards on 13 carries with two TDs. Maupin had 109 yards on 16 carries with a pair of scores of his own.
Sunray smacks Wheeler
Sunray opened the 2023 playoffs by getting a lopsided victory over Wheeler 66-16 in a Class 2A Division II clash at Rangers Stadium in Perryton on Friday.
The Bobcats (9-2) move on to the area round for a massive showdown with unbeaten New Home (11-0) at a time and place to be determined.
Sunray’s offense welcomed back quarterback Armando Lujan who sat out the regular season finale last week with an injury against Vega. Lujan was back to his normal self in his return torching the Mustang (4-7) secondary going 23-of-35 for 483 yards with six touchdowns passes. Lujan also ran it for 16 yards with two more scores.
Damian Barragan was a main weapon for Lujan catching six passes for 188 yards finding the endzone three times, Kagan Davis had five catches for 108 yards with a touchdown and Connor Petereit snagged four balls for 67 yards with a TD.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Bobcats, Dawson Bennett had a pick six for a second week in a row and Davis added an interception.
Clarendon blasts Boys Ranch
Clarendon kept up its momentum as one of the hottest teams in the state by beating up Boys Ranch 46-6 during a Class 2A Division II bi-district matchup at Dick Bivins Stadium on Friday.
The Broncos (8-3) run their win streak to eight straight games and will now get set to face Seagraves (6-5) in the area round at 7 p.m. Thursday in Floydada.
Coming off a fantastic performance against Wellington, senior leader and quarterback Lyric Smith put up another great outing rushing for 129 yards on 19 carries with three touchdowns and went 12-of-25 passing for 215 yards for two more scores.
Class 2A Division I
Farwell takes down Olton
Farwell kept District 1-2A Division I strong with a dominant 42-21 win against Olton a bi-district game at Littlefield on Friday afternoon.
It’s the second straight year for the Steers to take down the Mustangs (7-4) in this very round.
Farwell put this game away in the second quarter thanks to a 21-point quarter that put the Steers up 28-7 at halftime. Quarterback Jonathan Armstrong and senior captain Corey Stancell led the way with both having great games. Armstrong used his arm to go 9-of-19 for 153 yards with a pair of touchdown tosses. Stancell chewed up the Olton defense for 189 yards on the ground on only 13 carries with touchdown totes of 89, 18 and four yards. Stancel also had 12 tackles on defense with two interceptions, one that he returned for a touchdown.
Farwell (8-3) returns to the area round to square off with Sonora (10-1) at 7 p.m. Friday in Snyder.
