It’s early in the district season, but don’t tell the Amarillo High Lady Sandies that.

The Lady Sandies made a statement on just who the measuring stick is and has been in District 3-5A over the past decade with a dominating sweep of the Frenship Lady Tigers, 25-14, 25-7, 25-21, on Tuesday at the Tiger Pit in Wolfforth.

Five games into league play, AHS now has complete control of the district lead sitting at a perfect 5-0 while moving to 19-8 on the year.

“I think we responded well to a pressure situation,” AHS head coach Haleigh Burns said. “We want to defend our district championship and Frenship is a new opponent since they dropped in from Class 6A. Playing in the Tiger Pit is a tough place to play, but we handled it well and are team responded and got us the win.”

Not only are the Lady Sandies undefeated in district play, AHS also runs its incredible league win streak to 72 straight games dating back to 2020.

“I think the streak is special,” Burns said. “I think it’s something this team takes a lot of pride in and they want to follow in the footsteps of the great players and tradition set before them. We don’t talk about it a lot, but we know about it very well.”

AHS never allowed the Lady Tigers (20-10 overall, 4-1 in district) to find momentum in the match Tuesday. The Lady Sandies controlled their side of the net with strong passing and taking over the net to take the first set 25-14. AHS then owned the second set (25-7) behind middle blocker Hattie Freeman, who knocked down 11 kills and secured the net with four blocks.

“I think the offense was great all night,” Burns said. “We passed it very well and served the ball excellent. Hattie Freeman did a great job for us and took the pressure off our other hitters that teams always key on. We were focused and we also played great defense.”

Frenship’s Reese Roberts did have 11 kills with three digs. Teammate Madison Ryan went for six kills and six digs while Emery Ingram registered 11 assists.

QUICK HITS

The Tascosa Lady Rebels were able to bounce back from their first district loss Saturday by knocking off Lubbock High on the road Tuesday, 25-16, 25-11, 25-10. Presley Neslage operated the offense with 25 assists. Presley Ward and Blaire Whatley took advantage with a combined 19 kills Ward led the team with 10 and Whatley tallied nine. Tascosa moves to 4-1 in District 3-5A. LHS falls to 13-16 overall and 1-4.

Lubbock-Cooper was able to snap a two-game losing skid by finding the win column thanks to a three-set sweep of Caprock at home, 25-22, 25-13, 25-13. The Lady Pirates stay in the league hunt at 3-2 and improve to 21-7 on the year. The Lady Longhorns drop to 5-14 overall and 1-4 in district. Broox Lopez had a double-double effort for Cooper with 18 assists and 10 kills.

It was down to the wire, however, Frenship Memorial was able to rally back from down two sets and stun Lubbock Coronado in a five-set thriller, 24-26, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-13, on Tuesday. The win puts the Lady Panthers (13-15) at 3-2 in District 3-5A. The Lady Mustangs slip to 1-4 in district and 11-12. Brooklyn Davis was outstanding in the comeback for Memorial with 19 assists and 19 digs for a double-double. Teammate Mercedez Rodriguez added to the special night with 19 assists, eight digs and eye-opening seven aces.
