Canyon roars back to rout Wichita Falls

For most of the first half Thursday night, the Canyon Eagles seemed primed to fall in a shocking upset at Childress, falling into a 17-point hole which is usually insurmountable in the playoffs.

But in the end the Eagles soared higher, and they would up ending an era for Wichita Falls High.

Canyon began a comeback on the final play of the first half and didn’t let up for almost the next 22 minutes of game action. The Eagles reeled off 42 unanswered points and cruised by Wichita Falls 51-33 to advance to the area round.

Either Lubbock Estacado or El Paso Bowie awaits Canyon (9-2) at a time and place to be determined next week.

For a bit, it looked like Wichita Falls (2-9) would keep the Eagles from advancing. Playing in their final season due to the consolidation of Wichita Falls ISD into two high schools, the Coyotes played like a team with something to prove, as Cameron Jones scored three touchdowns to give Wichita Falls a 26-9 lead late in the second quarter.

However, Canyon got some momentum going at the end of the half. On the final play of the half, Boston Bell hit Jacob Burris on a 6-yard scoring pass to cut it to 26-15 and give the Eagles some hope.

Canyon went with that and dominated the rest of the game. Christian McGuire scored the first four touchdowns of the second half for the Eagles running the ball and finished with 129 yards on 18 carries.

Ryan Rivera actually led Canyon with 166 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, as the Eagles gashed Wichita Falls for 406 yards rushing.

Dumas routed by Decatur

Dumas never really got into the game against Decatur at Snyder, as Decatur opened the game with 38 unanswered points to roll to a 45-14 victory and end the season for Dumas.

The Demons finished the year 4-7.

Decatur (7-4) took a 31-0 halftime lead as Nate Palmer scored three touchdowns for Decatur. Palmer ran for two touchdowns and caught a 70-yard scoring pass from Jed Ross.

All told, Palmer ran for 114 yards on 11 carries. Ross threw three touchdown passes.

Freshman Colton Mills threw two touchdown passes for Dumas.

Class 4A Division II

West Plains rolls over Clint

The West Plains Wolves continued to show they’re ready for prime time, as they won their 10th straight game by routing Clint 41-14 at Seminole.

West Plains (10-1) will play the winner of the Graham-Hillsboro game in the area round at a time and place to be determined next week.

The Wolves used a balanced attack to roll over Clint (4-7). Quarterback Reid Macon completed 13-0f-17 -passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns, and Jordi Hernandez ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

Dawson Hall had 14 tackles for West Plains.

In the other game involving an area school in District 2-4A Division II, Borger’s season came to a rough end with a 63-14 loss to unbeaten Monahans. Borger finished the season 4-7.
