Thursday’s games

Class 4A

Canadian (4-0) at Randall (3-2), 7 p.m.
Clashes between teams from different classifications who always have realistically high postseason expectations generally carry the whiff of amused anticipation. That’s true with Randall hosting Class 3A Canadian, although Canadian is hardly a typical 3A program. The No. 1 Wildcats are heavy favorites, which says a lot more about them than it does about Randall. Both teams can score, but Canadian can score a whole lot more, regardless of classification. … Canadian 41, Randall 21

Dumas (1-4) vs. El Paso Austin (2-3), 6 p.m., Ratliff Stadium, Odessa
It’s been a rough pre-district season for Dumas, which has lacked consistency on both sides of the ball. This is a last chance for the Demons to tune up for district play in two weeks when things really count. Austin has won two straight, although the Panthers have had similar early struggles. The implications for both teams are fairly obvious, so look for a sense of urgency to kick in for Dumas to take some momentum into district. … Dumas 28, Austin 13

Class 1A

Follett JV at Darrouzett (0-4), 7 p.m.
It’s hard to pick against the varsity squad but Follett has a solid program which extends down to the JV. …Follett JV 44, Darrouzett 32

Friday’s games

District 2-5A
Division I

Amarillo High (2-3, 1-0) vs. Caprock (1-4, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Amarillo High opened eyes last week pounding Tascosa 42-6 starting district in style by cranking out 466 yards of offense and limiting Tascosa to 60 rushing yards. Sandie senior QB Will Flamming has dialed his game up the past two weeks. The Rock continues to fly around and certainly had their chances in opening district with a 21-7 loss to Coronado. That game was tied 7-7 going into the fourth. This one? AHS and The Rock first met in 1963 and 60 years later AHS offense will be too much for Caprock’s offense to keep pace with over four quarters. … AHS 31, Caprock 14

Tascosa (1-3, 0-1) at Abilene High (3-2, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Tascosa is flat out struggling having produced three TDs over the past 10 quarters. Plus, the Rebs have a serious gut check this week after seeing their rivalry game with AHS last week go sideways trailing 35-0 by halftime. Abilene High? The best team in 2-5A DI. This is not the road game for Tascosa to heal its wounds. … Abilene High 42, Tascosa 14

Lubbock Cooper (2-2, 0-0) at Lubbock Coronado (2-3, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Cooper opens district with two weeks to prepare for Coronado and knowing its two losses are by a combined two points. Coronado opened district scoring late to slip past Caprock. Won’t be easy but this nod goes to Cooper. … Cooper 28, Coronado 21

– Lance Lahnert
Last week: 3-1 (.750)
Season: 11-5 (.687)

Class 4A

Canyon (4-1) at Andrews (3-2), 7 p.m.
In a common theme for these 4A teams, it’s another final tune-up before district play begins. Canyon’s gotten it done with defense and enough offense to get by, as quarterback Boston Bell has shown steady improvement each week. The Eagles will face a challenge defensively trying to contain the Slot-T offense of Andrews, different from what they’ve seen before. This one will be close, but Canyon prevails. … Canyon 24, Andrews 21

Hereford (5-0) at West Plains (4-1), 7 p.m.
This might be the best final pre-district matchup anywhere this week between two teams who have exceeded and lived up to expectations respectively. Hereford is the feel-good story of the Panhandle after winning only one game last season, and West Plains has shown last year’s successful first season was no fluke. There’s plenty of intrigue but give the Wolves the edge over the Herd due to home field. … West Plains 31, Hereford 21

Pampa (1-4) at Borger (3-2), 7 p.m.
One of the longest running rivalries in the area resumes with another final non-district showdown between teams who appear headed in opposite directions. Pampa showed some signs of life coming off injuries after losing late to Perryton, and Borger is building some momentum after beating Dalhart in a shootout. The entertainment factor should be high, but an increased sense of urgency will spark the Harvesters. … Pampa 20, Borger 17

– Lee Passmore
Last week: 3-2 (.600)
Season: 20-8 (.714)

Class 3A

Bushland (4-1) vs. El Paso Riverside (4-1), 7 p.m., Wigwam Stadium, Seminole
The Falcons make their longest road trip of the season meeting Riverside in Seminole. Last year, Bushland handled the Rangers. Expect the same again this time around. … Bushland 42, Riverside 20

Muleshoe (5-0) at Brownfield (3-2), 7 p.m.
There’s a very good possibility the Mules explosive offense goes over 40 points for a sixth straight game. I don’t see a lapse of any kind for the Mules before heading into their district schedule. … Muleshoe 45, Brownfield 16

Dalhart (4-1) at Levelland (2-3), 7 p.m.
Look for the Golden Wolves to head down to the South Plains and bounce back from their first loss of the season. … Dalhart 35, Levelland 21

Gruver (3-2) at River Road (1-4), 7 p.m.
This is one of the better matchups of Week six. Gruver has been playing very well and could easily be 4-1 while the Wildcats are getting better by the week after getting their first victory against Sanford-Fritch. Don’t look for the ball to be in the air much but do look for a physical war. … Gruver 32, River Road 27

Friona (1-3) at Slaton (0-5), 7 p.m.
The Chieftains make it two wins in a row going against former Clarendon coach Clint Conkin and a Tiger team that has yet to figure it out. … Friona 40, Slaton 19

– Kale Steed
Last week: 5-1 (.833)
Season: 26-5 (.838)

Class 2A

Perryton (1-4) at Stratford (4-0), 7 p.m.
Here’s another clash that’s going to be very good. The Rangers are much better than their record indicates, and teams have yet to figure out Elk QB Bryce Braden. This will be fun. … Stratford 35, Perryton 30

Boys Ranch (2-3) at Wheeler (0-4), 7 p.m.
The Ranch is rolling with back-to-back wins thanks to better offensive play and very excellent defense. The Mustangs are long overdue for a win. The fourth quarter decides this contest. … Boys Ranch 26, Wheeler 22

Guymon, Okla. (4-1) at Sunray (4-1), 7 p.m.
The Bobcats are really good, I’m telling ya. Look out for this team heading into district and the playoffs. The “Sunraid” offense is explosive but their backuped by some dudes that can play defense. … Sunray 55, Guymon 8

Vega (1-4) at Olton (3-1), 7 p.m.
The Longhorns need to get healthy before district play gets going. … Olton 27, Vega 14

– Kale Steed
Last week: 5-3 (.625)
Season: 38-15 (.716)

Class 1A

Paducah (3-2) at Follett (3-2), 7 p.m.
After a tough start to the season based on their schedule the Panthers have won three straight games in impressive fashion. The Dragons are a solid team but not on the same level as Follett as coach John Anderson’s team prepares for district action in three weeks. …Follett 60, Paducah 18

Wildorado (1-4) at McLean (4-1), 7 p.m.
The road doesn’t get easier for the Mustangs taking on a Tigers team that is quietly 4-1 on the season. McLean’s versatile offense will be too much for Wildorado on the road. …McLean 62, Wildorado 20

Booker (3-2) at White Deer (3-2), 7 p.m.
A fully healthy Bucks’ team would make this game very intriguing, but Justin Rucker’s squad has been hampered by injuries in the last two weeks. The Kiowas are still stinging from the loss to their rivals last week and will use that as fuel for a victory. …Booker 46, White Deer 28

Carrollton Prince of Peace (1-1) at Silverton (3-2), 7 p.m.
A rare Friday night game for the Owls and the home crowd will get treated to a show.  Sawyer Francis will add to his numbers by gaining more than 150 yards on the ground as the Owls fly high past the Eagles. …Silverton 58, Carrollton Prince of Peace 12

Claude (2-3) at Amherst (5-0), 7:30 p.m.
Last week the Mustangs unleashed an offensive onslaught against Meadow and will need to do the same this week to stay with an undefeated Bulldogs squad that is firing on all cylinders. Look for the spread offense of Amherst to be too much for Claude to keep down. …Amherst 60, Claude 24

Groom (2-3) at Miami (5-0), 7:30 p.m.
The only undefeated Six-Man squad in this Amarillo-area, Miami, wants to stay that way against a Tiger team that is getting better each week. Despite the improvement, the Warriors will be too much for Groom to handle. …Miami 56, Groom 12

Whitharral (4-1) at Nazareth (2-3), 7:30 p.m.
Two straight late game losses have the Swifts stinging heading into a matchup with No. 4 Whitharral. This could potentially be an upset special as Nazareth plays well at home and the Panthers aren’t the same team, they were last year. …Whitharral 46, Nazareth 38

Valley (2-3) at Crowell (4-1), 7:30 p.m.
Talk about offense and you have to bring up the Wildcats. In their four wins they’ve scored 74 or more points in each one and cracked the century mark against Strawn.  Valley’s defense has Tucker Schlueter but that just won’t be enough to stop Austin Hernandez and company. …Crowell 70, Valley 32

– Craig Sperry
Last Week: 10-2 (.833)
Season: 49-10 (.831)
