Canadian uses big second half to blast rival Childress
In a game full of momentum swings the Canadian Wildcats reeled off 35 unanswered points to pull away from a gritty Childress squad and earn a District 3-3A Division II opening win, 62-28, at a very damp Fair Park Stadium on Friday night.
Canadian had opened a 17-0 advantage at the 10-minute mark of the second quarter. The Bobcats quickly erased the Wildcat lead by going to the air with quarterback Scout Smith and his receivers Lamont Nickleberry. Smith hit Nickleberry on a 22-yard score making it 17-7 Canadian. On the next possession, Nickleberry showed off his talent tipping the ball to himself for a one-handed snag down the sideline for a 50-yard touchdown and it was all of a sudden 17-14. After Childress got another stop, Smith led the Bobcats down the field punching in a QB sneak as the Bobcats took a 21-20 lead into halftime.
But the third quarter is where the No. 5-ranked Wildcats showed how good they can be. Leading 34-28 with 8 minutes left in the third quarter Childress had a 4th and four at the Canadian 15-yard line, cornerback Preston Miller picked off a Smith pass at the 5-yard line stopping the Bobcat momentum. It was all Canadian from that point forward behind quarterback Camren Cavalier and a stingy defense. Canadian had three straight possessions with an interception including a Wyatt Davis pick-six. Cavalier became unstoppable as the junior had a hand all seven Wildcat touchdowns. Cavalier was incredible, especially during the second half where Canadian outscored Childress 42-7 in the final two quarters. Through the air, Cavalier was 10-of-17 for 229 yards with two touchdown passes to Miller. On the ground, the junior did most of his work carrying the ball 23 times for 211 yards with five TDs.
Canadian (4-2, 1-0) has scored over 50 points and over 500 yards of offense in its last three games and gainsed a measure of revenge on a Childress (2-4, 0-1) team that beat the Wildcats for the district title last year.
Spearman blanks Dimmitt
Spearman snapped a nasty four-game losing skid by going on the road to shutout Dimmitt 46-0.
The Lynx, who haven’t won a game since Week 2, improved to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in District 3-3A Division II. Dimmitt falls to 0-6, 0-1.
Spearman racked up 453 yards of offense with most of those coming from the rushing attack. Isaac Servantes was the main catalyst behind that powerful run game for the Lynx piling up 276 yards on only 14 carries with four touchdowns.
Friona holds off Tulia
In the most competitive clash of all the District 3-3A Division II openers, Friona picked up a third quarter touchdown that was enough to sneak past Tulia in a defensive battle 13-7 at home on Friday night.
Both teams traded first quarter touchdowns as the game was tied, 7-7 at the break. in the third quarter, the Chieftains broke the tie game on a 55-yard pitch and catch from Jose Saucdo to Josh Gonzalez for the 13-7 advantage. Mario Bautista led Friona with 112 yards on 19 carries. Alexis Rivas had the first quarter touchdown for the Chieftains.
Friona is now 3-3 overall and 1-0 in district. Tulia falls to 2-4, 0-1.
District 2-3A Division I
Bushland stays unbeaten
The No. 6-ranked Bushland Falcons opened District 2-3A Division I play like they closed out the non-district schedule.
On a very rainy night at Falcons Stadium, Bushland did enough on offense and leaned on its stellar defense to blank a talented Muleshoe squad, 34-0 on Friday.
Bushland is on a season-long roll at 7-0 overall and 1-0 in district. Muleshoe falls to 5-2, 0-1.
The Falcons continue to get better running the football, especially on a night that was very difficult to throw. Running back Ivan Soto toted the rock 23 times for 112 yards with two touchdowns. Dawson Jaco delivered two touchdown tosses on 92 yards passing. The Falcons defense held the Mules to less than 50 yards of total offense.
Dalhart downs River Road
Dalhart drove down the field in the closing minutes to punch in a late touchdown and knock off River Road in a thrilling District 2-3A Division I opener, 28-26, at home on Friday night.
The Golden Wolves trailed the Wildcats 26-20 midway through the fourth quarter. Dalhart quarterback Kyler Read led a drive down the field and capped it off by scoring a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:36 left to tie the game. Read then ran the 2-point conversion in giving Dalhart the 28-26 lead.
Read was fantastic throwing for 153 yards, rushing for 156 yards, combining for four total touchdowns.
Dalhart improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in district. River Road falls to 2-5, 0-1.
Class 2A
District 1-2A Division I
Panhandle blasts Highland Park
Panhandle opened district play in emphatic fashion by blowing out Highland Park 82-12 on Friday night at Panthers Stadium.
The Panthers are 1-0 in District 1-2A Division I and 5-1 overall. Highland Park slips to 1-5, 0-1.
Quarterback Landyn Hack accounted for nine total touchdowns in the victory for Panhandle. Hack was 9-of-12 passing for 380 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 121 yards with four more TDS. Hack also had an interception return for a score. Teammate Wyatt Brookshire chipped in with 123 yards rushing with a pair of TDs.
Stratford beats up Farwell
Steady offense and stingy defense was what Stratford used to hand Farwell its first loss of the season during the Elks’ 40-7 dominating victory on Friday night at E.L. Sam Bass Stadium on Friday.
Stratford (6-0 overall, 1-0 in district) has won 18 straight games dating back to last season. Farwell suffers its first loss falling to 5-1, 0-1. The Elks held the Steers to 176 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers. Stratford put up an early 20-0 lead behind three touchdowns from quarterback Bryce Braden. Braden opened the scoring on a 9-yard run. Braden then found his brother Luke Braden for a 38-yard TD and followed that with a 4-yard scoot that put the Elks up 20-0. Braden finished the game throwing for 175 yards with two scores and chewed up the Steers defense for 105 yards with three more TDS. Luke Braden had four catches for 89 yards and Zane Burr added 60 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Sanford-Fritch finds win column
After six long weeks, the Sanford-Fritch Eagles finally found the win column beating rival West Texas High 28-26 at home on Friday.
The Eagles snap a five-game losing streak moving to 1-5 overall but more importantly 1-0 in District 1-2A Division I. WT High falls to 3-3, 0-1.
Braden Freeman tore up the Comanches defense for 199 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Freeman also had two interceptions on defense.
District 1-2A Division II
Gruver doubles up Booker
Gruver opened district staying hot with a fourth straight win doubling up Booker 28-14 on Friday night.
The Greyhounds are 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the league. Booker is 4-2, 0-1.
Pratt McLain went for 52 yards on the ground on 17 carries with a touchdown. Ridge Holland returned from injury to provide 37 yards rushing and a score. Quarterback Mason Gibson threw for 106 yards with a TD toss. The Greyhound defense made life tough for the Booker offense as the Kiowas tallied 135 total yards.
Vega wins Oldham County Championship
Vega went on the road to Boys Ranch on Thursday night and came away with a 28-6 win to open district play and continue to earn Oldham County bragging rights.
The Longhorns won their 10th straight game dating back to 2012 in this meeting.
Vega is more importantly 1-0 in District 1-2A Division II and 3-4 overall. The Roughriders are 4-3, 0-1.
Jose Silerio was slippery in the backfield showing off his speed for 130 yards rushing on 13 carries with two touchdowns to lead the Longhorns. He also made five tackles on defense. Teammate Joaquin Segovia added 82 yards rushing, and 75 passing yards with two scores. Paxton Green led the Vega defense with 11 tackles with two of those solo.
District 2-2A Division II
Wellington shuts down Shamrock
The No. 3-ranked Wellington Skyrockets kicked off District 2-2A Division II play the right way with a 36-0 blanking of Shamrock on Friday.
The Skyrockets (5-1, 1-0) dominated on both sides of the ball racking up 410 yards of offense while holding Shamrock (4-2, 0-1) to under 100 yards and four first downs.
Wellington put the game to rest early building a 36-0 halftime lead. Quarterback Carson Tarver threw for 85 yards with two scores and rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown. Gumaro Rincon chipped in with 68 yards and a TD.
Clarendon cruises
Clarendon went on the road and handled Wheeler 47-0 on Friday.
The Broncos have gotten hot winning four straight games improving to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in district. Wheeler drops to 1-5, 0-1. Jmaury Davis continues his tear on opponents knifing through the Wheeler defense for 269 yards on only 16 carries finding the end zone five times.
Memphis gets win over Quanah
It was exactly what Memphis needed to do if they wanted any hopes at the playoffs. The Cyclones took care of business at home taking down Quanah 26-14.
Memphis is a very important 1-0 in district and 4-2 overall. Quanah struggles continue at 1-5, 0-1.
Austin Valle did his job and more for Memphis stacking up 167 yards on the ground on 27 carries with three touchdowns.
