Ryan Pennington, Amarillo High volleyball, Jr.

On the court: Pennington had one of her best weeks of the season during Amarillo High’s three wins over Canyon, Lubbock Monterey and San Angelo Central. The junior, who plays opposite on the court among other positions, totaled 31 kills during the three victories with 34 digs, seven blocks, five aces and three assists. On the season, Pennington has knocked down 148 kills with 165 digs, made 31 blocks, 18 aces, and added 17 assists for a Lady Sandies team that is 20-8 overall.

Coach Mike Moffitt: “Ryan has been a player we’ve counted so far this season. She is playing well and she’s versatile playing four positions for us. She has had to push herself and you can see her confidence growing. It shows in her emotion every time she steps out on the court. Ryan has become one of our better hitters and someone we are really gaining trust in. One thing she has done really well is she is getting timely points for us. Whether it is coming out of a timeout or at the end of close games she just gets those key points that has helped us win. She’s a very athletic young person and you can tell she comes from a hard-working athletic family.”

Pennington: “I think we’ve been playing well especially for the schedule we’ve played so far during tournament season. Our defense is really coming together and we’re playing more together as a team each time we’re out there. Personally, this is my first year on varsity. I was on JV last year, so I feel like I’ve excelled to where I am at this point last season. My goal is to just keep working hard for coach (Mike) Moffitt and keep getting better individually and as a team.”
