Chance Cook has found a home at New Mexico State, and he couldn’t be happier. A little over a year ago, the Canadian graduate tweeted the stunning news that he intended to transfer from Oklahoma State.
Despite playing 26 games in two seasons for the Cowboys, while being a popular special teams player, he never received a scholarship.
Cook eventually sat out all of 2018, entering the NCAA’s new transfer portal.
A year later, it’s a decision he says was well worth it.
“I don’t have any regrets,” Cook said. “As I’ve gotten into this college football world I’ve learned it’s a big business,” Cook said. “It’s an adult business at that. I think I made the right decision moving forward for myself and my family and I couldn’t be happier right now.”
Staying silent for months, Cook took back to his Twitter on national signing day in February to announce his signing with the Aggies.
“It’s a totally different world getting that scholarship,” Cook said. “It’s amazing to feel wanted. My sophomore year at Oklahoma State I was treated like a scholarship player but I wasn’t on scholarship. To get here to New Mexico State, and be on full scholarship is amazing.”
With offers on the table from multiple Division I and Division II schools, Cook’s decision to NMSU was far from just football.
“School was the main reason I chose New Mexico State,” said Cook, who earned a bachelors in Natural Resource and Land Management last May at OSU. “I wanted to get my Masters in what I graduated with.”
Since arriving in Las Cruces, N.M., in May, Cook wasted no time making an impact.
Through summer workouts he won his teammates over thanks to his intensity and toughness in the weight room.

“I like the blue collar culture they have here,” said Cook, who helped lead Canadian to a 31-0 mark and back-to-back state title in 2014-2015. “I’m blue collar and I felt like it fit. My goal is to be the best leader I can, do the best I can on the field and make an impact.”
Cook and the Aggies open the season at Washington State on Aug. 31, followed by a trip to No. 2 Alabama on Sept. 7.
