DALHART – That Friday night’s clash between Bushland and Dalhart for the No. 2 seed in District 1-3A Division I wasn’t a playoff game was bad news for the visitor and good news for the host.
The best news for both teams is that they’re playing again next week, only Bushland has a lot more to live up to opening the playoffs.
It’s hard to imagine a game going any better for the Falcons than it did at Dalhart. Bushland was unstoppable in just about every phase offensively and gave up literally nothing to the Wolves in rolling to a shockingly easy 40-0 victory to clinched that No. 2 seed.
The Falcons (7-3, 3-1 in district) will play Jim Ned next Friday in the bidistrict round in the Lubbock area at a time and place to be determined.
If Bushland plays anything like it did against Dalhart (7-3, 2-2), the Falcons will certainly be playing beyond next week. Other than some kicking game miscues, it’s nitpicking to find anything they did wrong against the Wolves.
“(The Wolves) are a really good football team and if you had told me 40-0 was going to happen right before the game I’d have called you a liar,” Bushland coach Josh Reynolds said. “Sports are really weird sometimes but we played really well. We executed at a high level and we had a high level of intensity and focus. I’m just really proud of our kids for handling business.”
Bushland never seemed to let Dalhart in the game at the outset and was brutally efficient in every aspect in a surprisingly one-sided outcome. The Falcons did whatever they wanted offensively and never punted. Only a pair of missed kicks kept them from taking bigger than a 27-0 margin into halftime.
They wasted no time in establishing what they wanted to do offensively. After Dalhart punted on the game’s first offensive possession, Bushland quarterback Parker Hall took the ball on a simple keeper, bursting up the middle for a 64-yard scoring run which gave the Falcons a 6-0 lead after the extra point kick was blocked.
“We were just trying to set the tone that first play and we had it set all week,” Hall said. “The linemen did a great job blocking and it was off to the races after I got past the line. We got great movement out of the o-line.”
That huge early statement by the Falcons didn’t last just that one play. Bushland had an extremely balanced offensive attack with 498 total yards, rushing for 297 and passing for 201. Two quarterback kneel downs in the final minute actually took them below 500 yards on the night.
Hall, naturally, was a key factor in both methods. He threw a pair of touchdowns to Asher Koenig in the first half, the first a 14-yarder late in the first quarter to make it 13-0, concluding a 92-yard drive.
Reynolds was very direct in acknowledging the key to his team’s offensive success.
“Offensive line,” Reynolds said. “They dominated the game. (Dalhart) has a really good defensive front with some big kids but we just ran the ball really well and it opened up our passing game.”
The Falcons appeared ready to put the game out of reach midway through the second quarter. However, when a drive stalled at the Dalhart 6-yard line, Kannon Aven missed a 23-yard field goal which appeared to give the Wolves life.
Dalhart moved it past midfield for the first time, but on fourth down, the Falcons spilled quarterback Kaleb Speer for a 1-yard loss and took over at midfield.
On the next play, Bushland resorted to some trickery. Hall threw a backward pass to MJ Hildebrand, who found a wide-open Zeke Pool for a 50-yard scoring pass to make it 20-0.
The Wolves put together another respectable drive down to the Bushland 24, but the Falcons again forced a turnover on downs. Bushland concluded the half with another touchdown drive, concluding the drive with a 17-yard scoring pass from Hall to Koenig.
There was still a half to play, but the Falcons had already established their intent. On three straight possessions carrying over into the second half, Bushland stopped Dalhart on downs. Dalhart managed a mere 118 yards of offense.
“The defense was awesome tonight,” Reynolds said. “It was a great job by defensive coordinator Kip Holt and our defensive staff to hold those guys to zero. They have a great scheme. They’ve put up some points this year but we just dominated the line.”
The running game completely took over in the second half with a big lead. Colton Foote scored on a 38-yard run in the third quarter and Graham Morris concluded the scoring with a 31-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
Foote and Morris both went over the century mark, with Foote running for a game-high 136 yards on 13 carries an Morris picking up 105 on 12 carries. For good measure, Hall ran for 87 yards on nine carries.
Hall didn’t make a lot of big throws down the field, but he was deadly efficient, completing 17-of-19 passes for 151 yards.
“I try to get the ball to receivers in space and they did a great job tonight,” Hall said. “I didn’t throw the ball downfield much but when I did they made good plays.”
The best news for the Falcons is that they went into hostile territory and ruined the night for their district rivals. That’s the type of mentality which should serve them well in the postseason.
“We talked about it being a playoff atmosphere,” Reynolds said. “It’s not the playoffs where you lose and go home but it was a big game. We have a friendly rivalry with these guys and we knew it was going to be a great crowd and we wanted to treat it like a playoff game.”
