The high-flying Bushland Falcons have that “it” factor when it comes to offense.
Points are coming in bunches over that last month and that trend carried the same as the drizzly weather conditions didn’t hamper the offenses in Bushland’s wild 70-55 victory over an aggressive Slaton Tiger team to wrap up the non-district schedule Friday night at Falcons Stadium.
Since an 0-2 start to the season with losses to Seminole and Canadian, Bushland has found a spark by reeling off four-straight wins to close out the non-district schedule at 4-2 before opening District 1-3A Division I play with Denver City at home next Friday.
“I think when you win four in a row you are feeling really good,” Bushland head coach Josh Reynolds said. “That’s what you want to see and that’s how you want to be playing heading into district. We have come a long way since Week 1, though I feel we have plenty to fix. But, I’m proud of these guys and how we’re looking heading into district.”
Over this four-game win streak the Falcons offense is flat out soaring. In five of its six games, the Falcons have spread their wings by going for 40 points or more. Through this four-game win streak, Bushland is averaging an eye-popping 59 points a game while averaging over 450 yards per contest.
“The offensive line is playing great,” Reynolds said. “You can’t be good at all without them. I love are tempo. Any positive play we want to go fast and we’ve had that a lot lately. We always want to put our opponent on their heels and we’ve done a great job of that by executing.”
Bushland had the tempo working and were clicking on all cylinders from the opening drive against the Tigers (3-3). The Falcons never trailed and led by as many as 21 points. On the opening possession, Bushland marched right down the field with Colton Foot starting the first of many scoring plays on a 1-yard run putting Bushland up 7-0.
Slaton did tie the game early, 7-7, but Bushland went right back to work with quarterback Parker Hall hitting consecutive TD tosses to Asher Koenig of 28-yards and then 24-yard strike to Kannon King making it 21-7 to end the first quarter.
Bushland built a 35-14 advantage in the second quarter, and led 42-21, however, the Tigers hung tough and refused to go away cutting the deficit 42-28 by half and in the second half kept the score with a touchdown due to special teams miscues. However, Bushland’s offense was too much and the relentless pressure of scoring was something Slaton couldn’t keep up with behind second half touchdowns from Hall 26-yard touchdown pass to Brekan Tabor, a 76-yard kickoff return by Dawson Hall, a Hall QB keeper for a score and a pair of touchdown scampers from Foote.
“It felt like we were in control the entire game,” Reynolds said. “Slaton never quite and they are athletic. Maybe one of the more athletic teams we’ve seen. They kept cutting the lead and staying in the game in the second half. We have a lot to work on especially on special teams but the offense did great things and we were able to get the win.”
The Falcons offense finished the night 592 total yards. Hall was sensational once again going 17-of-25 for 258 yards with three touchdown tosses. He also ran for 69 yards with two more scores. Koenig led a loaded receiving unit with four catches for 84 yards including his TD, and Foote tallied 132 yards on the ground with three trips to the endzone for a Bushland team that chewed up 314 rushing yards.
