Randall graduate and West Texas A&M golfer Jack Lankford sizzled during his final round just like Sunday’s temperature to run away from the field and claim the Dos Equis XX Open championship at the Comanche Trail Golf Complex Arrowhead layout.

Lankford, who carded a 54-hole score of 199 (17-under-par), qualifies for his first ever Coors Tournament of Champions and makes it a family affair in the process. His father, Scott, and his older brother Clay, has also played in the Amarillo Major summer ending tournament in the past.

“Winning this tournament meant a lot to me,” Lankford said. “My dad has qualified and my brother qualified for the Coors Tournament of Champions, so it’s cool that we can all share that together. It’s a big deal to me and I’m excited to participate in it.”

Lankford is a familiar name on the local golf scene. As a senior at Randall last year, Lankford helped lead the Raiders to a fourth place finish at the UIL Class 4A state golf tournament while finishing fourth as an individual. This past spring, the 19-year old was on the West Texas A&M golf team that earned a spot at the NCAA Division II National Golf Tournament.

The smooth swinging lefty opened Dos Equis XX Open with a strong start with an opening round 66 on Friday to hold the lead heading into Saturday’s second round. During the second round, Lankford and the rest of the field had to fight on and off rain showers, as Lankford shot a 71 at the Ross Rogers Golf Complex Mustang Layout and was sitting three shots out of first heading into Sunday.

During Sunday’s final 18 holes Lankford put together a bogey free round. Lankford caught fire early with three straight birdies and then birdied the ninth hole. On the back nine, Lankford stayed hot finishing his card with five birdies on his final six holes to shoot an impressive 62 on the day.

“I was really confident with my driver Sunday,” said Lankford, who shot a 30 on the back nine Sunday. “I had trouble with my wedge on Saturday and I worked with my dad at the driving range after that round. My driver in that final round gave me a lot of confidence and my wedge shots put me in a lot of good positions for birdie puts. I was able to make my putts drop and that was the biggest key was my confidence.”

Recent Wildorado graduate and reigning UIL Class 1A state champion Hunter Corman finished second overall with a 54-hole total of 202 (14-under par).
