OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank proves fruition of enthusiasm for golf in Amarillo

Provence, a Randall graduate and University of New Mexico golfer, continued his dominance of the Amarillo summer golf scene by winning an unprecedented third straight Michelob Ultra Men’s City Championship on the Mustang layout at the Ross Rogers Golf Complex.

Provence makes history in the process becoming the first golfer since Marvin Dick, Jr. (1968-1970) to win this event three straight times.

“This feels great,” Provence said. “I’m very grateful to be a part of this tournament and the opportunity that comes with it. This is truly special.”

This Michelob Ultra Men’s City definitely had a different feel than most years. There was much more than an invite to the season-ending Coors Tournament of Champions on the line.

The stakes couldn’t have been higher for Provence, who with the victory qualified for spot in the inaugural Occunet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank as a part of the prestigious Korn Ferry Tour, which is set for June 8-14.

“I think it’s an unbelievable opportunity,” Provence said. “I’ve never gotten the chance to play in a pro tournament and I’m very grateful for all who believed in me. This has always been one of my goals. Everyone supports me. I wouldn’t be here without my family and friends.”

Provence opened the Michelob Men’s City on Friday with a victory over Bodee Bratcher 6 and 4, and then took down Tyler Paige in Saturday’s quarterfinal 5 and 4.

Opening Sunday’s grueling 35-holes Provence played, Provence held off a strong challenge from Tate Allred in the semifinals (2 and 1), advancing to take on Andrew Brewer for the championship in the afternoon.

Provence stayed hot, opening the final round of play with four straight birdies to go 4-up on the front nine. Brewer pushed back, cutting the lead to two, however, Provence held on down the stretch to put the match away with a par on No. 17 for a 2 and 1 win.

“I think I had eight birdies in a row,” Provence said. “I had four straight to end the match against Tate (Allred) and then four straight to start against Andrew (Brewer). Tate and Andrew gave me a run. Andrew fought back on that back nine and put pressure on me, but I was able to get it done.”

Provence will continue a busy summer heading to play in a U.S. Open qualifier set for June 8, at the Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Ore.
