1-2A/ 2-2A Track and Field meet

There were remarkable performances that stood about the others during the 1-2A/ 2-2A Area Track and Field meet in Panhandle on a breezy Friday afternoon.

In the midst of those achievements, the Gruver Greyhounds and Panhandle Ettes both pulled away to win team championships.

The Greyhounds, who are having an incredible season in boys athletics, finished the meet with 126 points to edge district rival Sunray, which finished second with 98 points.

Sophomore standout Mason Lankford spotlighted the meet for Gruver qualifying for regional in five events. Lankford set the tone in the morning field event session when he won his first of three gold medals by clearing a new personal-best 6-feet-7 inches in the high jump. Lankford immediately went from the high jump to the long jump pit and hit the board for a silver medal leap of 20-11.

After a break, Lankford shined during the running finals. The 2026 Press Pass Sports Boys Basketball Player of the Year won his second gold medal cruising to a time o 15.34 in the 110-meter hurdles, and then made it a sweep with a strong 41.59 to get back on the gold medal stand in the 300-meter hurdles. Lankford then ended the meet, helping the Greyhound mile relay team to a fourth place finish (3:33.63).

Sunray’s second place finish came with some great moments Friday. Speedster Dominic Dominguez was one of those moments sprinting to a time of 11.37 for a silver in the 100-meter dash, and then turned on his jets to help lead the 400-meter relay team to a gold medal clocking a 43.83. Dominguez finished the meet helping the mile relay team get second place thanks to a time of 3:32.64.

Teammate Mason Gray did his part in the field events. The multi-sport athlete tossed a 49-6 for a victory in the shot put, and followed that with a second gold in the discus launching a 150-7.

Panhandle’s Cooper Treadwell, Highland Park’s Dominic Vega and Wellington’s Major Brown were also double gold winners. Treadwell ran a very strong 400-meter race getting a time of 50.32 for his first gold, and was on the mile relay gold medal team (3:31.43). Vega blazed a time of 11.02 to leave the competition behind in the 100-meter dash and was able to capture a silver in the 200-meter dash (22.45), and Brown popped off a 22-1 3/4 for gold in the long jump followed by a 44-5 1/2 in the triple jump.

A stellar track and field season is only heating up for the Panhandle Ettes.

Panhandle beamed throughout the day for 153 points and the meet championship. Just like the district meet, Nelly Thiessen and Carly Land carried the Ettes by qualifying to regional in a combined nine events.

Thiessen walked off the track Friday with three gold medals and a silver. Thiessen showed her strength in the shot put once again launching out a 42-7 for the victory. In the running finals, Thiessen impresses with her speed claiming the gold as a part of the sprint relay team (47.96), as well as on the 800-meter relay team (1:44.5). She also took a silver in the 100-meter dash (12.54).

The legacy of the Land name is in great hands with Carly. The junior is headed back to regional in five events. The triple gold medalist Friday won her first one as a part of the sprint relay. Land rushed to a time of 25.13 to get a victory in the 200-meter race and was the anchor leg on the mile relay. Land was able to impress in the field events as well with a pair of bronze medals. Land hit a 16-6 3/4 in the long jump and clearing 9-feet in the pole vault.

West Texas High’s Scout Burris was another performer to keep an eye on Friday. Burris made quite the medal haul walking away with a pair of golds and a pair of bronze medals. Burris made it a clean sweep in the hurdle races and made it look smooth with a time of 16.10 in the 110-hurdles, and a 47.68 in the 300. Burris was able to clear 4-10 for a bronze in the high jump and made a leap of 34-0 1/2 for a third place finish in the triple jump.

Sunray’s Jayde Andujo, Clarendon’s Madi Benson and Stratford’s Madi Braden were also multiple medal winners. Andujo took gold in the 100-meter dash (12.51), went silver in the 200 (26.13) and as a part of the mile relay (4:12.89). Benson went double gold in the distance events clocking a 2:24.04 in the 800-meter run and a 5:46.83 in the 1600-meter, and. Braden won gold tossing out a 132-3 in the discus followed by a silver in the shot put (39-7 1/2).

The Region I-2A Track and Field meet is set for May 1-2 on the campus of West Texas A&M.

3-2A/ 4-2A Area Track and Field meet

The Abernathy track and field teams were able to defend its home field by making it a sweep during the 3-2A/ 4-2A Area Track and Field meet on Friday.

The Antelopes tallied a total of 138 points for the boys team title while the Lady Antelopes scored 132 points for the area championship.

Caden Bird was on fire Friday leading Abernathy to the victory. Bird will be headed to regional in four events after leaving the track with four gold medals. Bird started his stellar day winning the long jump by leaping off the board for a 22-5 1/2. In the running finals, he was a part of the sprint relay that sped to a 42.0 for gold, then got on the podium with a victory in the 200-meter race thanks to a personal best 21.17 and was on the mile relay team that ran a 3:30.67.

Teammate Jake Harkey did his job in the throwing events. Harkey was the discus winner tossing a 155-5, and went silver in the shot (50-7).

There were also a few individual highlights.

Farwell’s Josiah Lopez went gold in the 3200-meter race (10:29.5), and the 1600-meter (4:54.98) on top of getting silver in the 800 (2:05.83). New Deal’s Avery Radloff also turned heads by clearing 6-feet-6 inches in the high jump, and Lion teammate Nash Ginn swept the hurdle races clocking a 14.35 in the 110-meter hurdles then a time of 41.07 in the 300-meter.

In girls’ action, Abernathy’s Emma Klatt was a huge part of the team title. Klatt won the high jump (4-10), was on the gold medal sprint relay team (50.95), and was a part of the mile relay winning squad (4:18.33).

Farwell’s Alexis Wade and Ava Jaime combined to advance to regional in four events. Wade was double gold in the 1600-meter (5:43.84) and the 3200-meter (12:21.20), and Jaime won the 800-meter race (2:28.83), as well as helping the mile relay team get fourth (4:22.56).

Olton’s Jentry Bressler is headed to regionals thanks to a pair of golds as is New Deal’s Macie Burkhead. Bressler won the 300-meter hurdle event running an impressive time of 48.33 and cleared 10-feet in the pole vault for another gold. Burkhead had an incredible throw of 148-4 for a personal-best to win the discus and followed that with a second gold medal thanks to a 42-6 in the shot put.
