A strong track and field season carried on for the Canyon as the Eagles flew to a District 3-4A/ 4-4A Area Track and Field meet championship on a gusty afternoon at Lubbock-Cooper High School.
The Eagles, the District 4-4A champions, won the area championship with 150 points, which was 63 points better than Midland Greenwood’s 87.
Baylor West, Emmitt Stewart, the long distance events and Kelton Burgoon made the team title possible. West was showing his speed throughout the finals, blazing a personal-best time of 48.15 to win the 400-meter dash. West was also on the mile relay team that won gold with a 3:17.48. Stewart followed right behind West in the 400 with an impressive sprint of 49.05 for a silver and was the anchor leg of the mile relay squad.
In the distance events, Aidon Tijerina claimed gold pacing the field with a 2:01.67. In the 3200-meter run, teammates Noah Cooper and Domenic San Miguel went second and third. Cooper was silver with a time of 9:25.68 and San Miguel clocked a 9:30.76, and in the 1600-meter race Cooper found the silver medal podium once more thanks to a 4:25.29, and won another bronze (4:27.79).
In the field events, Kelton Burgoon is going to regionals. Burgoon won the discus with a toss of 172-7 and placed second in the shot put throwing a 49-3 1/2.
Perryton’s Jacob Erickson was as good as anyone competing Thursday. The sophomore ran with authority to open the meet by setting a new personal-best time of 9:22.55 for a gold medal in the 3200-meter. In the afternoon, Erickson was back on the medal stand for his second gold getting a time of 4:25.03 in the 1600-meter race.
West Plains high jumper Brycen Williams keeps getting better and better by the week. The dominant linebacker on the gridiron can flat out fly, clearing a new season-best 6-feet-11 inches to a victory in the high jump, and Hereford hurdler Izak Dominguez qualified for regional by getting gold in the 110-meter hurdle with a 14.56 and the bronze in the 300-meter hurdles (40.29).
For a second consecutive week, Jackelyn Hernandez was a show stealer on the track and in the jumps. The sophomore standout punched a ticket to the regional meet in four events and brought home three golds Thursday. Hernandez opened her morning winning the long jump by popping off a 17-7. In the running finals, Hernandez helped lead the sprint relay team to a silver medal (49.49) and then won the 400-meter race sprinting to a new personal-record time of 57.38. To end the day, Hernandez was the anchor leg of the West Plains mile relay team that set a new season-best time of 3:57.88 for a silver medal.
Canyon’s Addyson Bristow and Presli Pool combined to qualify for regional in five events. Bristow went double gold by getting on the medal stand with a win in the 800-meter dash by outlasting the field with a 2:13.57. Bristow then took home her second gold medal in the 1600-meter run thanks to a time of 5:02.86.
Pool qualified in three events. Pool got her lone victory in the 3200-meter race pacing the competition for a time of 10:45.15. Pool then earned two silver medals behind Bristow in the 800-meter (2:20.69) and the 1600-meter run (5:03.25).
The Region I-4A Track and Field meet is set for May 1-2 at PlainsCapital-Park Lowrey Field in Lubbock.
