Amarillo High earns silver at Region I-5A tournament, Spearman claims silver in Region I-2A; Valley wins first ever Region I-1A championship

Region I-5A

For the fourth year in a row, the Amarillo High Lady Sandies are headed back to the UIL Class 5A state golf tournament.

The Lady Sandies fired a 36-hole score of 314 followed by a 316 for a 630 to to place second for a silver medal during the Region I-5A Tournament at the LakeRidge Country Club in Lubbock on Wednesday and Thursday. Grapevine won the team title with a 630.

Addison Britten paced Amarillo High placing seventh as an individual. Britten finished at 5-over-par for the tournament, shooting a 76 in the first round and a 77 on Thursday. Senior Tyler Held was right behind Britten in ninth place. Held fired rounds of 78-78 for a two-day total of 156.

The UIL Class 5A state tournament is set for May 4-5 at the Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown.

Region I-4A

It came down to a dramatic ending, but the Canyon Lady Eagles were able to punch a ticket back to the UIL Class 4A state golf tournament.

Canyon finished the 36-hole Region I-4A Tournament tied with Fort Worth Benbrook, but on the first playoff hole, the Lady Eagles earned the win to get the bronze medal and get to state.

The Lady Eagles finished with a team score of 674 carding a 329 in the first round followed by a 318 on the final 18. Lauren Robason helped Canyon soar placing 11th individually. Robason shot a 76 on Wednesday and then another 76 on Thursday for a 152. Teammate Kyla Cortese (77-78 – 155) came in 14th overall three strokes back of Robason.

The UIL Class 4A state golf tournament is set for May 4-5 at the Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.

Region I-3A

The Bushland Lady Falcons were able to fend off Jim Ned for a bronze medal at the UIL Region I-3A Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday at the Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird.

This will be the Lady Falcons fourth trip to the UIL Class 3A state tournament in the last five years. Bushland was seven strokes back of third place shooting a 355 in the first round, but were able to come roaring back on Thursday with a 335 for a 36-hole total of 690.

Ava Permenter, a senior leader on the volleyball court as well, took matters into her own hands by winning an individual bronze medal. Permenter opened the tournament with an 80 on her first 18 holes and then shot a 77 for a two-day tally of 157.

The UIL Class 3A state tournament is set for May 4-5 at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.

Region I-2A

Spearman’s Izzabella Slover celebrated her 16th birthday in grand fashion by leading the Lynxettes back to the UIL Class 2A state golf tournament for a second straight year.

Spearman claimed that silver medal and trip to state shooting a two-day total of 703 to finish behind regional champion Sonora (699) by four strokes during the Region I-2A Tournament at the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course in Canyon. The Lynxettes shot a first round score of 353 and followed that with a 350.

Slover was able to have a fantastic Thursday to win her second consecutive individual regional championship. After carding a first round 85, Slover found herself trailing Sonora’s Gentri Trainer (82) by three strokes heading into Thursday’s final 18. Slover picked up her game during that final round, posting an 81 for a two-day total of 166 to win the title by five strokes.

Vega is also headed to the state tournament. The Lady Longhorns placed third with a 36-hole total of 797. Dj Degraaf (98-98 – 196) and teammate Ashton Hartless (99-97 – 196) were he low scorer for the Lady Longhorns placing tied for 24th.

The UIL Class 2A state tournament is set for May 4-5 at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.

Region 1-1A

The Valley Lady Patriots made program history on Monday and Tuesday by qualifying for the UIL Class 1A state tournament for the first time.

The Patriots battled back from sitting in fifth place following Monday’s first round to taking second overall for a silver medal during the UIL Region I-1A golf tournament at the Meadowbrook Golf Club in Lubbock.

Valley didn’t have the best opening day sitting in fifth place with a 452, however, the Lady Patriots were able to battle back on the final 18 holes with a score of 398 for a two-day total of 850. Lenorah Grady (796) won the regional team championship and Springlake-Earth also qualified for state getting third (856).

Valley’s Hartlee Battey brought home an individual bronze medal with rounds of 96-86 for a 182. Teammate Tandy Hughes did her job with a top 10 finish carding rounds of 107-97 – 204.

Individually, Claude’s Breleigh Butler and Shamrock’s Aspen McAllister punched a ticket to the state tournament. Butler placed fifth overall at regionals (106-89 – 195) and McAllister came in sixth (103-96 – 199).

The UIL Class 1A state golf tournament is set for May 4-5 at the Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander.
